Ch 208: Far Worse Encounter

I went straight to my car only to be stopped by a far worse encounter, to find Kai glaring at me, while he sat on the hood like he'd been waiting for me.

"Don't even think about punishing me! I just broke his heart thanks to you! I let him know it's permanently ended between us! You should be happy!" I asserted sternly and harshly.

"I hope you don't fall for anything that Orlando said about Ashley," he said, piercing those eyes at me.

"Their friends," I replied, not sure what he was saying or why he was bringing this up.

His teeth gnash in vexation. Luckily, nobody was around to hear us argue in the parking lot.

"Never once have I slept with any Vampiress, I saw as my friend," Kai said with a hardened tone.

Then he asked with a malevolent growl. "When you saw Ashley, did you see any bruises on her body to indicate her boyfriend beat her?"

"I-I..." I was too flustered to answer. Yet my mind did recall that Ashley's face wasn't swollen. Nor were there any bruises on her legs and arms. In fact, she wore a revealing dress for somebody who was beaten.

During my silence, Kai's face only got madder as he gritted. "Orlando lied about me trying to see you at the hospital. So I hope you wake up and see he lied about Ashley!"

I swallowed a non-existent rock down my throat and chose to stay quiet. Kai was beyond hostile with anguish. So it was best to keep my mouth shut. Orlando wouldn't lie to me about this. He told me the truth about Kai coming to the hospital. When it comes down to it, Crystal was the one who lied, not Orlando, but I wasn't about to refute this to Kai.

Perhaps Ashley's boyfriend didn't hit her that hard. Regardless of what happened, none of this matters because I still lost the one I will forever love.

"You have me Kai so it doesn't matter who I believe," I finally whispered and hoped he'd stop his behavior.

Kai said nothing. His chest breathed calmly but the way he sat on the hood of the car was alerting. He took a long slightly aggravated sigh like he didn't like my answer.

"Get in the car," he curtly demanded and huffed so irritatedly.

I bit my lower lip and held my brokenhearted teardrops from dripping down my cheeks. I got in the passenger seat and shut the door immediately. Tension pressed between us side by side in the car. I peek over and saw Kai staring ahead with his one hand on the steering wheel. Regular breathing passed his nostrils. It was hard to say what he was thinking, but I knew by his firm body posture that he was angered.

"Why would you tell him you are pregnant?" He questioned me assertively when he changed the entire argument over to our baby.

His darker tone made my body flinch because he startled me. This darker aura made him so much more threatening.

"Uuh...I-I..." My voice drowned because I didn't know how to answer him. I did it to hopefully break Orlando enough that he'd never want me again, but I can't tell Kai that. He'll likely hate that concept.

"Well!" Kai gritted.

"I'll be showing," I mumbled, standing my ground against the blood-sucking beast.

Kai said curtly in this sternest tone, "you'll show. However, he thinks you just got pregnant when you've been pregnant for much longer."

"He was there for the ultrasound his Aunt gave me, remember?" I say more feebly than I meant to.

"I do, but you could have let him think you were only gaining weight. Winter clothing could hide the pregnancy," Kai said and I honestly didn't get him right now.

"Well, he knows so I don't know what the big deal is," I said, vaguely.

Now his neck moved and he glared protectively at me. "Be mindful of who you tell. Just because you trust somebody doesn't mean I do."

I held my tongue from speaking out of line. Now I better understood, Kai was protecting this baby. Regardless of the vamp baby being immortal. Its clear dangers present themselves in a way I don't fully understand right now in their vampirism world.

I gave a nod to tell him I understood and faced away from staring into his daunting eyes.

For a few minutes, Kai's eyesight burned into my facial side. Till he breathed and then started the car.

A huge heaviness lifted from my chest because he didn't discipline me this time for seeing Orlando. However, the ride home was eerily quiet. Too quiet for my liking with an angry vampire. Fortunately, we were back home shortly. This time I followed him to the bedroom like a stray kitten.

Kai plopped himself on the couch. I wasn't sure why I chose to do this, but I took a chance and sat next to him. As always he browsed through the channels and I could tell by how his lower lip was graveling, he was upset.

"Meow!" Before I had a chance to say something, Sapphire spoke for me and crawled out from underneath the couch to greet me. But my eyes gaped when she turned away from me and rubbed her head on Kai's knee. I tried not to smile or giggle when she marked his pant leg with her body. Kai sat like a dead blob and paid no attention to her. Sapphire meowed again and started kneading two of her paws on top of his leg.

"She seems to like you," I softly spoke and I saw a slight neck muscle move in response to my voice from him.

"Thank you for taking care of Sapphire and Sky while I was away," I gratified, gently since this was a touchy topic, but I saw Sapphire liked him. It must mean something.

I held my breath when he scuffed the back of Sapphire's neck and gently flopped her on my lap.

"I never said I took any part in taking care of Sapphire or your pregnant horse Sky," Kai's voice came out sharp and snippy. But he wasn't fooling me.

I scratched Sapphire's chin and laid my head on Kai's lap when I put her on my belly. She lays down purring away as Kai tried to remain mad but I saw he was breaking.

"Thank you, Kai. I'm sorry I didn't believe that you came to the hospital," I said softer and looked up at him. Now I saw that stubborn barrier was breaking apart. He knew I wasn't fooled by him.

"You're welcome," he muffled loud enough to hear him. Then he spiraled my hair with his fingers and I slowly drifted into a blissful sleep.
