Chapter 6

Jan 6th, 2022

Jennie was back in her hometown, and this time she was Ashton who had been a great deal of support for her. Once Jennie arrived back at college, with puffy eyes and a broken heart he comforted until she stopped crying.

Jennie then proceeded to tell Ashton all about what happened with Jamie and he was patient throughout it all. He then spent the entire year being a crutch to Jennie, to lean on whenever she needed him and that brought closer than before.

Jennie brought him home to introduce to her mother who had been absolutely delighted to see her daughter happy once again since her haste departure the previous year. She welcomed Ashton into her home with the most welcoming hug and talked to him for hours on end.

Currently, she was in the kitchen sipping a cup of tea while her mother was trying to teach Ashton how to make Lindser cookies when the doorbell rang. She opened it and was met with an unfamiliar face at the door. The person handed her a letter and walked away.

Her mother called to ask who it was and she replied that it was someone asking for directions. She clutched the letter in her hands with a tight grip. It was addressed to her with no indication of where it came from. Decided that her curiosity was much higher at the moment she opened it.

'My dearest Jennie.

I am aware that we have some issues we haven't spoken about since our last encounter and I would like to speak to you about them.

Meet me at The Groove at our usual booth.

Forever yours

Jamie

P. S Please don't make me look like an idiot in front of Mrs Wentworth'

Jennie crumbled the letter in her palm and stared at it like it was the devil incarnate. How dare Jamie contact her?! And worst of all when he had an entire year to do so!

But a small part of her wanted to see what he was going to say and that ended up winning over her rational side. She ended up mumbling something to her mother and Ashton about taking a walk and left the house in haste.

Jamie couldn't stop fidgeting from nerves. He wasn't even sure that Jennie was going to come and that left him sweating up a river in the booth.

The door chimed and Jennie walked in with all her glory. Her mere presence made Jamie feel all sorts of things but he had thought this over and over and decided what he was going to say but they all seemed forgotten once he saw her face.

With a scowl on her face Jennie approached Jamie and sat down across from him. Being in this close proximity of him had begun to make her antsy. They sat there in silence for a few seconds before Jamie broke the silence.

"I'm sorry..."

Jennie sighed.

"It's alright."

Jamie gently and hesitantly held Jennie's hands and placed a delicate kiss on her knuckles.

"No... It's not. I shouldn't have hurt you like that Jennie and it was wrong. The way I acted was completely unforgivable."

Jennie smiled tentatively and then squeezed his hands in reassurance.

"I forgive you Jamie."

He smiled at her and then interlocked their fingers together.

"You know... Five years have passed and it's your 23rd birthday."

It was his 28th but Jennie didn't know why it was such a big deal.

"Yeah... And?"

Jamie took a deep breath and spoke.

"I love you."

Jennie froze and physically tensed. Suddenly they're interlocked fingers started to burn he skin and she yanked her hands away. This disappointment Jamie but he kept going.

"I've been in love with you since you told me five years ago- no scratch that. I've been in love you since we were kids. The reason why I had done this stupid deal was because I thought you would leave me if you knew of my actual feelings at the time but now I'm certain tha-"

"I don't love you anymore."

Jamie immediately stopped talking after he got interrupted. He isn't sure he heard that right. She doesn't love him anymore? What kind of bullshit was that?

"What do you mean?"

"Jamie... Honestly I'm quite disappointed in you. You had such little trust in me to stay by your side and gave me test to see whether I was worthy of your love. I'm your bestfriend Jamie. I've always been there for you, ever since I was born!"

Jamie looked down in shame. He understood where she was coming from but gods be dammed, it stung.

"I understand that now Jennie and I love you."

"It doesn't matter now Jamie!"

"Why is that?!"

"Because I love someone else!"

Silence spread between them like a highly contagious virus in a crowded area. A sinking feeling went through Jamie.

"I thought you said you'd always love me..."

"I believe you described my love for you as a 'Teenage Infatuation' so don't lecture me on spoken words Jamie."

"That didn't mean I was giving you a free pass to move on!"

"A clear rejection is better that a fake promise! There is always going to be factors that influence someone's decisions but you intentionally pushed me away Jamie and at some point I stopped fighting."

Silence was looming over them once again and neither of them dared to say a word.

"Who is he?"

Jamie hated the way she smiled slightly before she answered.

"Ashton."

Blinding hot angry fire spread through him like a wine stain of a white table cloth. Soaking and staining the fabric forever but he let out a sigh and asked another question.

"Does he make you happy?"

"Very."

Jamie lifted his head and looked at Jennie dead in the eyes.

"He breaks your heart, I'll gouge his eyes out with a hot spoon and feed them to him."

Jennie giggled at his protectiveness over her and smiled bright. Gods be dammed she missed her best friend and she was delighted he approved.

"Do I get to meet him?"

"Maybe someday..."

They laughed together and got their usual orders from Mrs Wentworth who scolded them about how they behaved towards one another to which they apologized.

They spent the whole afternoon together just talking and catching up. To them, this was enough.

Jennie and Jamie against the world.
