Despair And Freedom

"Huh…" Asher stumbled back, feeling the warm blood on his face.

He almost couldn't believe his eyes at what had just happened.

"He's dead…" Asher muttered to himself, gazing at the crushed body of the guard.

Because he had stumbled back from the shaking ground, Asher had avoided the large rock falling on him. But the guard was not so fortunate. Him running away actually put him right under the range of the rock, crushing most of his body along with his head.

Asher was frozen watching it for a few seconds before he was brought out of his stupor.

~Rumble~

The cave did not stop shaking and more cracks were spreading through the ceiling.

"SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! I GOTTA RUN!" Asher felt the adrenaline rush through his body as the urge to escape filled him.

~CLANG~

But just as he got up, the chains stretched taut, holding him in place.

"UGH!" Asher groaned in pain at his joints being jerked. 'I can't get away, unless I remove the chains.' He understood.

Unfortunately for him, just before the guard was about to release his restraints, the rock had landed on him.

"Wait, the key!" Asher knew the guard should have the key.

He tried to look for it under the light of the torch that was lying next to the dead guard. Thankfully, the torch had fallen out of the guard's hands and wasn't snuffed out. It allowed Asher to soon locate the key that was still attached to the man's waist.

"There it is." Having spotted the key, Asher's eyes went wide.

~CLANG~

But when he tried to lean in to get the key, the chains stopped him once more.

They were too short!

"NO! This can't be happening!" Asher shouted in frustration and fear.

All the planning and talking he had with Berk and Tess would be a waste if he didn't get out.

His eyes soon became bloodshot, and Asher tugged on the chains.

~CLANG~CLANG~CLANG~

"I WON'T DIE HERE!" Asher shouted as he tried to break the chains somehow.

The tunnel continued to shake and tremble, while debris kept on falling from the roof. Asher was hit by small stones too, but couldn't bother to even register them. All that was present in his mind right now was to break the chains and get away from here.

Every second that Asher was stuck there felt like an eternity to him. But no matter how much he tried to pull onto the chains, they simply would not budge.

After a minute of the hopeless ordeal, reality dawned on Asher.

'I'm going to die here…'

His face fell cold, while he lost the strength in his limbs.

Asher fell to his knees and looked at his reflection in the puddle in front of him. The light of the torch allowed him to see the despair and fear in full detail.

~Rumble~

~CRACK~CRACK~CRACK~

The tunnel became more unstable, and the cracks were now spreading down from the roof.

~clang~

It was at this moment that Asher felt his left hand suddenly feeling loose.

"Huh?" Confused, Asher looked at his hand that could now be moved freely. "What?" he turned around and saw that the chain had come loose!

"HOW?!" Asher could barely believe his eyes until he saw the crack on the wall.

"THE CRACK FREED IT!" He finally understood.

The very same tremors and cracks that had put him under fear had freed him at this moment.

Not wasting this chance, Asher tugged on the right chain and caused the crack to widen.

~CLANG~

And after a few firm tugs, the anchoring bolt was pulled out from the wall, freeing Asher!
