1 Chapter 1

Lucy's pov

What do you do when you feel like your whole world will crash down and wanting to swallow you up whole, everything around you pausing and all sound becomes whispers in my ears. I didn't know what to do with myself, how to stand up straight or use any bone in my body. I fell to the ground bringing everything down with me.

My parents died in a car crash on their way to watch my theatre performance. All I could remember was how excited I was that I finally got the lead after years of putting myself out there and trying my best to do everything perfectly. Instead of getting time to grieve I was shipped off to my cousins house to live, strangers who only went to family events once in a blue moon and their conversations always started with "Oh look how big you have gotten". All in all I loved them to bits secretly and Kale would never know that he was my favorite cousin of them all. Yes he teased me constantly but when it did matter he stood up for me and would always be by my side when I needed it the most, and I had never needed it more then now.

The drive to their house in Kale's car was silent. Not like the awkward silence but the comforting one that makes you feel loved. I knew that when I needed to say something there would only be support. We had all lost so much and it was nice to finally have someone who understood what I needed at this moment and someone who didn't push me to express the hole in my heart.

After a six hour drive to their house we finally arrived. Two teenage boys were sitting on chairs drinking pop, boys I had never seen before and knew that they didn't live there. They looked so calm and collected like nothing could ever ruin their days. I wanted to someday feel so safe in a place that I was comfortable in but no matter where I would go I no longer had a home to call my own.

I didn't want them to see my tear stained cheeks so I let my hair fall over my face, leaving the car while hanging my head low not making eye contact with anyone. I walked up to the door and could already hear Max, their dog barking at the door waiting for my attention. It is scientifically proven that dogs automatically know when you are feeling sad or just need a hug once in a while to make your day better. Walking in Max launched his tiny body at mine. He could just make me so happy sometimes, like he knew that I needed lots of love at that moment.

My thoughts soon landed on the boys outside who seemed so inviting and calm. I was so into my thoughts that I never heard the door creak open or the two boys with my cousins coming into the house. All at once their eyes landed on me as I was sprawled out in the middle of the entry laughing. The tears long gone.

"Lucy this is Ryder and Ewan my best friends," Kale said with a smile as he pointed at each one when he said their names. I let my eyes stare at Ryder a little too long as Kale was talking. He smiled at me and I looked away as fast as I could. Not only had my life changed drastically I was now living in a house with teenage boys and an adult that was never around but somehow I felt safe. I went from a house of being the only child of two parents who doted after me making sure I had everything I needed. If the scenery was changing then I might just have to change myself with it.
