The World of Wood and War

Marlon trudged through the autumn leaves, felling the November chill squeeze inside his jacket. He could vaguely see the Christmas banners adorning shop fronts, and the merry sound of church bells eclipsed all of the quiet hustle and bustle. He strolled into his university dorms, nodded to a shy wave from a girl named Freya, and clicked open the door to his small room. Marlon flopped down on the bed, and flicked on the TV. The sky darkened, and Marlon checked the clock. He lay back, pulled out his phone and... Bump. Marlon's eyes blinked open, trying to shield him from the piercing blaze of the spring sun. He could hear the distant rush of a river, and the soft chirping of birds all around him. 5: The Golem of the Trees

Marlon looked at his inventory. The slot where the wheel had been was blank. He moved his attention on to the second item in line, and examined it. (Race Chest - Uncommon Grade - Grants the user a random uncommon or rare grade race related item.). Marlon wondered what item he would get from this chest, and suspected a bow. After all, archery was usually associated with Elves. A small moan from his left made him turn.

Freya was curled up on the ground, clutching at her new wolf ears, a revealing trait of the Mystic wolves. Her new white tail drooped, a clear indicator of her pain. Marlon walked over to her, and held out a hand to help her up. "Th-thanks..." Freya murmured as she stood. "No problem" he said. "So, am I correct in assuming that you got Mystic wolf?" "Y-yeah." she half whispered. "Cool. I got Elf, which I'm pretty happy with." Marlon didn't reveal the full extent of his joy to Freya, of course. No-one should know about IT, after all. He turned his gaze away from Freya, and towards the chest. May as well, he thought. He tensed himself, concentrated, and the inventory menu disappeared to be replaced by the chest screen.

Green sparks began to spin round the chest, and fly into it. It began to stretch and expand, which interested Marlon. It was blown up to bursting, and finally did, in a flash of green sparks. Marlon waved the lime-green smoke away, and looked at the remaining object. A small book, surrounded by light-blue vapor, lay in the air, spinning slowly. Wait, blue? He stared at the book. Could it be? Could his luck really be this overpowered? Could he have really gotten a rare item from an uncommon chest? [Ah, I see you got a rare!] Marlon nearly jumped out of his skin. He had forgotten about sky-baby. [Geez, no need to be so frightened! It's only me! Anyhow, there is a chance, albeit a low one, to get an item a grade above the rarity of the chest you opened. You seem to be one of the lucky few! I've only seen five people do that before!] 'Wait, what! There have been people on Hanul before?' [Ahhhh, forget I said that!].

Marlon sighed and turned back to the book. It was still patiently floating there. He reached out and grabbed it. The book was surprisingly heavy, and Marlon almost dropped it. He opened his inventory and took a look.

(Golem of the Trees - Summon Spell - Rare Grade

This is a powerful spell that summons a wooden golem. Only elves can use this spell.

Level: 1

Speed: 20

Strength: 21

Cost: 10mana/30sec.

Extra Info: {Expand} )

Marlon's eyes widened with disbelief. 20 speed and 21 strength?!? This was crazy! It was a little less than double his levels! He eagerly opened the 'Extra Info' tab.

(Extra Info: For every 5 creatures of equal or higher level it defeats, the golem levels up. For every level, one of it's two skills will be randomly chosen to level up by one point.)

So the golem can get stronger? Awesome! The only drawback was the mana cost. He could only have the golem summoned for 2 and a half minutes with his current mana cap. "Hey, system." he thought "How and when does my mana regenerate?" To his mild surprise, the system actually responded. [Good question! Once you've been out of combat for a minute or so, they begin to regenerate every 30 seconds or so.] Hmm, Marlon thought. Could be better. So he could only use the golem for two and a half minutes before having to wait 25 to recharge it. In this case, he would probably need another, non-magical method of combat. He learnt the spell, and turned towards the last chest.

A swirl of grey sparks flew, but these ones were few, setting it's status as a common chest in stone. It finally blew up in grey smoke, which he waved away and walked forward. His heart soared. A bow! Perfect for ranged combat and it would give him time to recharge while the enemy was confused. Except... His heart sank. To work a bow, he needed arrows, and he had no arrows. Marlon sighed in disappointment. It seemed his luck had not lasted all that long...

Alrighty! This is today's chapter! Unfortunately, I'm going camping tomorrow so there won't be a Saturday chapter... But I will try to double release on Sunday, so I might make up for it! Anyway, add to your collections pwease.
