64 Survive pt.5

"Pfft- Ahahahaha!" James burst-out laughing at the sight of Tony Stark stumbling off the rooftop with a lazy, drunken smile. "Remember to add that to the tournament's highlight reel 'cause bloody hell, that's just too funny."

Sitting to his right, Queen nodded while she hummed in affirmation. Though she remained far more composed than her creator, if one looked closely, you could just barely make out the twitching of her lips as James replayed the clip a few more times in front of them.

"Heh, I bet this is going to be the biggest meme for years," the man smirked. "I sort of feel sorry for Pepper though, she must be getting spammed by callers from all over the world by now."

"It is quite likely, sir," Queen responded with another calm nod. Inwardly however, she was dreading the day her boss inevitably made such a mess himself and she found herself in her fellow secretary's shoes.

*bap! bap! brrt!*

The soft sounds of distant gunshots, drew both of the observer's attention back to the scene below.

'Hmm…' James internally mused, rubbing his chin while watching the start of the final battle with squinted eyes. 'This seems kind-of, I don't know, bland? I can't help but feel like its missing something…'

As if reading his mind, out of nowhere, Queen snapped her fingers and a familiar heroic melody started playing in the background.

As the electric guitar of Halo 2's Mjolnir Mix theme rolled in, James' eyes brightened and he glanced over at his AI before nodding. That was it, you couldn't have an epic showdown without an equally epic soundtrack after all.

Sadly, the trio of men on the rooftop didn't have the time to notice the blood-pumping OST in the background, as the infected chose that moment to bust down the stairwell door and charge their position.

•••••••••••

*BRTT! BRRTT! BRRRRRRT! BRTT!*

"Short bursts! Short bursts!" Adrian called out frantically over the gunfire, reminding his companions. "And NO sticky's!"

*BRRT! BRTTT!*

"Reloading!" Phineas yelled, causing the other two to pick up his slack for the moment.

"SCREEE!"

"SHIT!" Randy cried. "They busted down the walls! There goes our funnel!"

"Fall back to the farthest ledge!" Adrian made a decision, choosing to sacrifice their mobility in favor of giving them more time. "Lob your frags at the stairs while we retreat!"

*BO-BOOM!*

Two grenades exploded one after the other and took a good portion of the infected with them. Yet, as he fired while retreating backwards, the lack of a third caused Randy's steps to pause.

*BRRT! BRRT!*

Scanning the area whilst taking down a few infected that got close, his eyes widened in fear as they locked onto a certain Chitauri charging towards him, a burning blue orb stuck to the side of its head. The infected met his gaze and Randy could've sworn he saw the vile creature smirk, before it lunged at him.

Obviously, Randy didn't just stare at it like an idiot. Alas, the shock, fear, and anger of the moment, had compounded upon themselves, resulting in his inability to put the alien down before he was brought within the blast zone.

All he could do as the Chitauri neared him, strangely crossing its arms into an 'X' over its chest, was curse, "Phineas, you bast-"

*zzzzz-BOOM!*

""SCREEEEE!""

Seeing the explosion of blue plasma, Adrian scowled before shooting a glare at Phineas to his right, causing the man to flinch back in both shame and regret. He didn't have the time to linger on the matter however, as the infected were still coming, in ever more increasing numbers.

*BA-BA-BAP! BRRRT! BRRT!*

As the two of them continued to fire into the swarm, Adrian's back soon came into contact with a hard surface, indicating that he'd already reached the guardrail lining the furthest edge.

There was nowhere else to go now…

Thinking quickly, he ducked under the railing, getting on the other side of it and placing only the open air to his back. The balls of his feet perched atop the rooftop's ledge as he leaned forward, resting his elbows on the metal bar before him.

While obviously not a great position and possessing even less mobility than before, Adrian felt much better knowing he wasn't trapped with his back up against a wall.

*Prrrrt! Prrt! Prrrrrrrrt!*

The slightly softer sounds of a suppressed M7 SMG, replaced the violent cracking of an MA5 and briefly drew his attention to the other man beside him.

"B-Boss!" Phineas called out over the chaos. "I'm down to just my secondary!"

'That's what you get for not listening to me,' Adrian snidely thought to himself, before shouting back. "Doesn't matter now! It's every man for himself!"

In his panic, it didn't seem like Phineas had heard his warning. Nonetheless, Adrian slowly crept along the rooftop's edge, increasing the space between the two of them and making his stance clear. Sure they were going to share the grand prize and had worked together all day, but by this point none of that mattered.

Their group was guaranteed to win, but that didn't mean the game was already over. The difference between first and second place was huge and Adrian would nab that fame for himself.

*Prrt! Prrrrrrrrt! Prr-!*

The frantic shots coming from his right ceased abruptly, creating a distinct sound that seemed to echo and hang in the air. The world appeared to slow down at that moment, the Chitauri pausing for a split-second as the realization of what just occurred hit them.

There was a small moment of eerie silence that lingered, stretched within the perception of those present, before it was shattered by another sound all to familiar…

*Click-!*

Phineas' eyes widened in fear as he backed up against the railing.

"SHIT!" He cried out in panic. "I'm out! I'm out!"

In desperation, he shakily glanced over to his left, only to just now notice a gap of over 20ft had grown between them. As the severity of his predicament struck him, his pupils shrank to pinpricks while a shiver crept down his spine.

""SCREEEEE!""

As if they could taste the man's terror, the infected pounced on him with a ferocity never seen before.

Though his ending was swift, his screams seemed to echo off the surrounding buildings long after he was gone…
