“Where’s Kenny?” I was breathless by the time I slid back to my seat, Billie right behind me. “I had wanted to dance with him after the intermission for Prom King and Queen.”

Four pairs of eyes stared at me. Hard.

“What, does he have two left?” The image of Kenny dancing off beat in my head, but carryin’ with him that indomitable confidence he always seemed to exude, left me making the ugliest of snorting pig laughs. Oh, that would be a sight to see all right. But the gang didn’t look like they were about to let me in on any humiliating secrets.

“You mean to say, he’s not with you?” Mickey adjusted his glasses, a nervous tick. “See? I told you guys I had a bad feelin’—”

“You’re just bein’ paranoid is all!” Toni picked at his bag of toffies, struggling with the packaging. Ricky reached over, no words, and Toni handed him the bag. “Kenny’s fine! So what if he’s been missin’ for the past two hours? Like we all haven’t needed some alone time!”
