The Meeting

Modesty continued to stare at the photo before she put it down. A cold shiver ride up her spine. She no Longer felt safe. She put the photo back in it's frame and set it gently down on the shelf. Then picked up her bag and began stuffing it with travel supplies. What was she thinking? She didn't need to go anywhere, or...did she. Confused and panicked, Modesty ran out if the door with little possessions and no plan at all. The roads of the town were mapped out in her head, navigating was normally easy, but the fog was thick an the sky was dark and cold and it closed in around her. Without knowing, she continued to weave her way around buildings shadowed of what little light the full moon provided, an the buildings grew darker and loomed over her, looking ready to fall and crush her. She kept running. She ran until she no longer knew where she was and found herself slipping into a dark alleyway. Her knuckles tightened around the object in her her hand as she- What object? Modesty looked down to find the same photo clenched tightly in her pale, nimble hand. But before she could react, loud echoing footsteps, thumping down the alley towards her. Shoving the photo in her back pocket, she pulled out a knife out her boot. It was decorative, dull and slightly rusted but it would have to do. "Who's there" she yelled. "Step into the light, slowly." There was no reply. "I'm armed!" She shouted, just wanting to add something the silence that was her response. Feeling like a idiot, she went to slip the knife back into her boot. Then she heard the foot steps again, not as loud but definitely closer. "Who's there!?" she yelled again, this time with a response. A pale young boy with black hair and matching eyes that flashed red stepped towards her. He had a happy looking face and a grin like a madman. His eyes flashed over to the knife, but he said nothing of it. He stuck out a hand and shook the end of the knife, clearly trying to hide a smile. "Zack Anthony" He said " Pleased to meet you." Modesty glanced at her picture, and only then did she realize, This was the boy from the photograph.
