Chapter 30: Kidnapped

It’s dark when he wakes.

He comes to lying on his side, hands bound behind him. There’s heat on his face, and he braces himself for more pain, but it’s only the warmth of a campfire; he can smell the smoke. His head aches, like someone has stuffed sponge up in the crevices of his brain, but otherwise he seems relatively unharmed. His sword is gone, though, which makes him stiffen.

“You’re awake?” a voice says from a little ways away.

Selmas cracks his eyes open as little as he can manage. Jigen is sitting across from him, on the other side of the fire, poking at it with a stick. His posture is loose, elbows braced on his knees as he leans forward over his legs. Selmas’ sword is leaning up against a log next to him.

He tilts his head at Selmas. “I know that you’re looking at me. You might as well sit up.”
