Chapter 20: Trial and Error
“I don’t know if this is a good idea,” Selmas calls up to Byrin.
Byrin, who is sitting near the top of a large boulder, looks unconcerned. “It’ll be fine.”
Gwynfor, on the other hand, is acting like this is the best idea she’s ever heard. “Let him do it. I want to see what happens.”
“We don’t even know if I can do things like that,” Selmas protests.
“Well, you’d better figure it out!” Byrin says. “Because I’m going to jump!” He stands, balancing carefully on the top of the rock, and then—
“Don’t!” Selmas shouts, trying to infuse his voice with the same kind of power he had used on Gwynfor, but he’s too late.
Byrin takes a running leap, directly off of the boulder and into the shrubbery below.
Selmas winces. Gwynfor cackles.
Byrin pops his head out of the bushes. There are leaves in his hair.
“It didn’t work,” he says morosely.
“I told you it wouldn’t.” Selmas says. “Are you okay?”
