Chapter 56 Savannah

Three hours later, the train stopped but the group didn't leave the train, as it was now night and the sun had already disappeared. They closed the train up and chained the doors shut from the inside. The group then rested for the night, in the morning, John gave everyone some of the food he had left. All John had left was some PeanutButter crackers, so the group ate that slowly, savoring the taste of artificial peanut butter.

While they were eating John checked Carly's wound and saw that it was looking much better. John changed the bandage quickly, and Carly smiled at him in appreciation.

When the group had finished eating, Lee undid the chains on the door, and everyone hopped out of the boxcar. They were still about a mile out from the city, so the group began to walk down the tracks. John played with Clem on the way, seeing who could balance on the iron steel tracks the longest.

Clementine won after John couldn't hold out any longer, as her prize for winning john gave her some gummy bears. Clementine then smiled the whole walk to the city, chewing on her gummy bears. Omid had very little difficulty because his leg had been fixed properly.

They could see a huge bridge in the distance, it was the Talmadge Memorial Bridge. There were also thousands of buildings, the sunrise was breathtaking. As they walked closer to the city, John gave Carly his Glock, so she could protect herself. She wanted to refuse it, but John pulled out his S&W .500 revolver, seeing he had a backup she stopped refusing and took it with a sweet smile. John also gave her the holster to carry it more efficiently.

As they made their way closer and closer to the city, they saw more and more walkers. John would walk forward with his pick and take care of them. Lee and Kenny also took out some when they were getting to the outskirts. Seeing how they handled the walkers; John was kind of disappointed. He began wondering how they even survived this long, especially with all the shit that has happened around them.

They arrived in the suburbs and walked down a road; it was eerily quiet. There weren't any walkers nearby and it was kind of like a normal road would be, except for some broken cars that were littered around. Walking past some gated houses, Omid was limping a little because of all the strain he had put on it.

Earlier John had overheard Lee and Kenny talking about a man who had been contacting Clem over the radio. Knowing what type of shit could be out here, John stayed close to Clem and Carly in order to keep them safe. As they walked down the street Clementine looked at her radio before she asked Lee, "Can't I just hold it?"

Lee eyebrow furled before he said, "Not right now. Can you please focus for me sweet pea?"

Clementine looked a little dejected, but she said, "Okay, maybe later?"

Lee looked at her and said, "Sure, when we find a safe place. Christa interrupted them as she said, "Omid needs to rest. His leg won't hold up for much longer. It has started to bleed again."

Lee asks Kenny, "How much further?"

Kenny says, "Should be just a few blocks ahead."

Christa asks, "Are you sure there will be boats there?"

Lee says, "There sure as hell better be."

Clem said, "Swear." This caused Lee to sigh softly.

John says, "It'll be fine even if there aren't any boats. If we find a good truck, we could get back to my group."

Kenny asks, "What exactly is this group anyway?"

John answer as everyone listen in, "It was a prison, but some of the people were engineers, so we have fortified the place. I bet not even a tank could break down our walls."

Kenny said skeptically as the rest of the group was amazed, "How do we know you're telling the truth?"

John looked at Kenny straight in the eye before he said, "You don't, but I haven't done anything to make you doubt me either."

Kenny nodded as the rest of the group was also convinced as well, but they still wanted to look for a boat. They continued to walk for a while and when they were passing by an old church, suddenly a bell went off. The group thought it was just automated, but Lee said after looking at his watch, "What kind of church bell ring 20 after the hour. I think someone rung the bell just now, I thought I saw a person up there."

John nodded and said, "Yeah. I saw them too; we should move quickly. We don't know what the persons motive is, and we don't want to stick around to find out either."

The group nodded as they began to move through the street quicker, but as Chuck was walking past a street corner, he was grabbed from behind and bitten in the neck, causing blood to flow out. Seeing this John pulled his revolver out and began shooting, he shot six walkers before he reloaded, taking bullets from a pouch on his waste.

The group ran forward as fast as they could as John covered them from behind, but walkers came from in front as well. The group was forced to run down a road to the right, they ran for a couple minutes giving them some breathing room. Then they ran into one of the houses back yards through the side gate.

The gate creaked as it opened and closed quickly. Omid and Christa watched the fence as Kenny and Lee tried to find a way inside the house as the back door had been boarded shut. John crouched down in front of Omid and checked his wound and saw that it was bleeding quite heavily, meaning he had torn his stitches.

Seeing that he would start to bleed out, John unwrapped his wound before he sutured it closed once again. It was harder to do this time because the skin around the wound had been torn. John said after he finished applying a bandage, "You can't rip these stitches again or I will have no choice but to cauterize it. You don't want that to happen, it will hurt like a bitch."

Omid nodded as Christa gave him an earful, John then walked over to Carly and hugged her. She was shaking, but when John was wrapped around her, she immediately stopped. This simple action from John had calmed her down. John looked over at Lee and saw he was digging up a grave, Omid made a shitty joke about the walkers.

Lee dug for a while, but eventually he found the corpse of a dog. On the neck of the dog was a collar, this collar had a chip that would unlock the door. Seeing this Lee took the collar over to the door and tried to open the door by reaching up, but he couldn't reach.

As the group was debating what to do the door suddenly opened and Clementine stood in the doorway. Practically waiting for praise, seeing this Lee walked forward and petted her head, he said, "Good job, Clem."

Clem smiled at him, shining brightly from the praise; the group then filed into the building as John helped Omid in the house. Omid didn't even move his hurt lag and hopped into the house before John led him to a sofa and he sat down. John and Carly sat down at a table and talked as Lee and the rest searched the house for anything.

A while later John saw Lee come down the stairs, Christa confronted him about the radio, saying, "Why didn't you tell us the radio worked?"

John not wanting any internal strife said, "Calm down, Christa. You were asleep when we heard the radio go off. We just learned about it, like an hour ago."

Christa calmed down and said, "Oh, sorry about that Lee. I thought you were excluding us because we are new."

Lee said, "No harm done." Lee then walked over to Clem and spent some time with her. Comforting her for all she has seen since coming here. She was discouraged when she saw the walkers here as well, she had thought the place would be walker free.
