The Day Society Fell

Sitting down on one of the cots to finally take a breather, Erik motioned for his mom and younger brother to come sit with him.

"Sigh, yeah I guess I can tell you about the shittiest day of my life," Erik said with a sigh as he started to tell his mom and younger brother about what happened before they got to the neighborhood

[Flashback to earlier that day]

As the sun rises on Austin Texas, the bustling city and its inhabitants can be heard scurrying all around to reach their destinations.

In the eastern part of the city, sits a large home occupied by a 24-year-old man, his 19-year-old brother, and their visiting family members.

While most of the inhabitants are fast asleep, in the master bedroom the owner as mentioned earlier of the home awakes while being assaulted by his alarm clock.

*Ring!*

*Ring!*

*Ring!*

"Oh for fucks sake!" Erik said with a growl as he slammed his hand on the loud clock

*Ding*

*Yawn~*

"Man, I should not have had those drinks last night, how long have I even slept for?" Erik questioned himself as he looked over at the clock that read 6:30 AM

"Nice, a whole four hours," Erik said with an eye roll

As Erik rolled back over to his back, he laid one hand over his face to protect himself from the assault of sunlight coming from the window next to him.

'I really need to buy those blackout curtains.' Erik said making a mental note for himself that he most likely would never get around to doing

As he lay in bed for a few more moments trying his best not to fall back asleep, he couldn't help but grimace at the thought of having to go to the campus later today and submit his paper on the Battle of Tours and its effects on Europe as a whole for publishing.

Although he truly enjoyed learning about history, he always hated having to put pen to paper just to have his thoughts and conclusions scrutinized by a bunch of geezers who should be retired instead of still working.

'At least Dad is gonna come with me for moral support I guess.' Erik thought with a chuckle, while his dad is one of the most business-savvy people he knows when it comes to stuff like history and university matters, he seems like a deer in the headlights

Deciding it was finally time to get his lazy ass out of bed, Erik slid the sheets off of himself and he swung his legs to the side of the bed, and stood up to go and take his morning piss and brush his teeth before getting dressed for his morning jog before breakfast.

[20 Minutes later]

"Phew, thank god for the nice breeze outside, it seems fall might just be coming early this year," Erik said with a smile as his morning jog felt more enjoyable without the relentless assault of the Texas sun.

"While that may be true, what I enjoy the most is the lower level of humidity here than back home." Sofia, Erik's mom said as she rounded the corner into the entry hall to greet her second eldest son.

"Hah, I guess that is true, and good morning Mom," Erik said as he tried his best to hug his mom only for her to evade him

"I love you son, but du riechst höllisch, go shower first then I'll hug you," Sofia said with a light-hearted laugh

Feigning fake hurt, Erik left to go upstairs and take a quick shower before heading back downstairs and grabbing his plate of Bauernfrühstück.

As he was eating, Erik looked up and saw his youngest brother Lukas coming into the kitchen and sitting across from him at the table as their mother also passed him a plate of Bauernfrühstück.

"Oh thank god, I was getting tired of eating the food from the dining halls, thank you mother for visiting!" Lukas said as he stuffed his face with a fork full of food.

"Haha, Danke, mein kleiner Junge." Sofia lovingly said in response before throwing Erik a quick look. "At least one of my sons thanks me for making food for them."

"Thank you, Mom, I truly appreciate the food," Erik said with a chuckle as Sofia burned a hole into the side of his head before smiling and going back to what she was doing

While the two brothers ate, their father also came into the room and gave Sofia a kiss before sitting with them along with their mother as they all ate together.

"So, where is Elias this fine morning?" Lukas asked while shoveling another bite of food

"He said something yesterday about going to see Emilia to help her get fully moved in," Erik responded as he finished his food.

"Jeez, he should just ask her to dinner or something already, it's obvious that he likes her, and she also enjoys his company," Lukas said

"I agree, it's not like they're getting any younger, I expect to have grandchildren at the least within five or so years," Sofia said while throwing a side look at Erik as well.

"Mom, I've told you before, I just haven't found the right girl here, who knows when I'll settle down and have a family, in my opinion, you should focus all of your effort on Elias, he is already 28, and he his the heir to dads company, so he needs a family of his own soon too," Erik said while deflecting his mother's attention back to his elder brother

"Sigh, I still worry about you son, you dated that girl through most of High school and into college before she dropped out to go help her family, what was her name again?" Sofia said with a pondering look trying to recall the girl's name

"The farm girl right? Was it Mary? no, maybe Maddie? Huh, I can't remember her name either." Frederick said while also trying to recall her name

"Of course, you two do not remember, you always thought she was too "below" me for me to date her," Erik said under his breath

As the family sat there and ate for a little while longer, Erik excused himself to go and get ready to head to the campus along with his father.

[Later in the car]

"So, son, are you feeling confident in your paper?" Frederick asked as he kept his eyes on the road

"Yeah, hopefully, the people reading it also find it as high quality as I do."

"That's good," Frederick said as the father-son duo fell into silence

As Frederick was about to try and say something else, Erik switched on the radio.

*Bzz*

"Hello everyone, and welcome back to the morning news, I am Mitch Sandor."

"And I am Alexandra Elliot, and today we have some more information about the recent increase in police shootings and mysterious homicides where the bodies just seemed to get up and walk away!" The female news anchor said with a light tone

*Bzzz*

Deciding he didn't care enough about the news, Erik changed the channel to a music station and the two sat in silence with some music playing for the rest of the drive.

While they were moving through downtown Austin, traffic came to a stop at a red light and Erik looked out the window and sitting in an alleyway, he could see what looked like a vagrant who was slumped on the side of a building.

As Erik watched the man see if he was even breathing, he saw the man slowly rise up and stumble as he stood up, shuffling his way toward the street, just as he was about to exit the alley, traffic started moving again and Erik lost sight of the man.

*Beep Beep!*

In the background, a faint car horn could be heard as the father-son duo drove farther down the road and took a turn.

[A Little while later at the university]

Erik and his father were walking toward the building where he would meet the board to whom he would submit his paper when they were met by one of Erik's college friends whom he roomed with during their freshman year.

"Yo, Erik! What's up man I haven't seen you in a bit." Samuel, Erik's friend said as he approached him

"Oh hey Samuel, I thought you were lecturing today for that ancient Greece class since the professor was out," Erik said as he greeted Samuel

"Oh yeah, I'm still lecturing today, I've just got a couple of hours of downtime right now as the next class won't be for a bit, so I'm guessing today is the big day?" Samuel said as he glanced at the papers that were in Erik's hands.

"Sigh, yeah, man I don't know what it is but I'm stressing right now, I know the content I wrote about should be pretty good stuff but at this point who knows," Erik said as he rubbed the back of his head and nervously chuckled at the end

While the two friends conversed for a bit longer, Frederick couldn't help but look at the interaction with a smile.

'I'm glad Erik has finally come into his own and has found his people and some good friends.' Frederick thought, recalling how the only person Erik ever interacted with during high school was his girlfriend whose name still escaped him.

*Graaah*

As Erik was still talking with his friend, they were suddenly met with an interruption from a man who seemed to be shambling around.

"Huh? Mr. Smith is that you? I thought you weren't feeling too good earlier today?" Samuel asked the old man as he slowly started to pick up the pace and shuffled faster toward the man

"Uh, Mr. Smith, are you ok, do you need some medical attention?" Erik said as he saw the old professor keep moving toward his friend when suddenly the old man launched himself toward Samuel and took a chunk out of his arm.

"Gaah! Man, what the fuck is wrong with you!" Samuel yelled as he wrestled the old man off of him and kicked him in the gut

Erik, seeing his friend's arm was in bad shape moved toward him to go and help when around the corner came several more people who had greyish skin and looked like the crazed professor.

"What the hell." Erik verbally thought as he looked around finally taking in his surroundings and seeing more people shuffling toward them, some were faster than others but one thing they all had in common was none of the "people" were running, at most, they were briskly walking.

"Uh, son, I think we should move, judging from the professor's condition and how he attacked your friend I think we should avoid these people," Frederick said as he started to back away from the growing group of people while grabbing Erik's arm

As the two were backing up, Erik called for Samuel to follow but instead, he went to the group trying to get help, but all he got for his troubles was... well, eaten.

Watching on in horror at his best friend getting torn apart, limb from limb, flesh from bone, by the growing horde, Erik held back the urge to vomit as he finally changed direction and ran toward the nearest building with his father trying to seek out the campus security.

Running away from the horde of 'people' Erik couldn't help but voice a question that was blaring inside his head. "What the fuck is wrong with those people!" Erik yelled while running away with his father

As they neared the entrance to the building, another small detachment of around five of the infected people came towards them from the side, causing the duo to change their route and head another way.

[Erik Pov]

What the fuck

Why the fuck

How the fuck

What is going on?!

"Son, over here, the doorway is clear!" my dad said as we both ran toward the entrance that would act as our salvation, oh how short-lived that was.

*Bang! Click!*

"Come on, I locked the door we need to move!" Dad said as I looked back when all of a sudden loud banging began to ring out from the other side.

These things are really starting to scare the shit out of me

"What about the other people, all of the students, and professors?" I couldn't help but ask

"Son, right now, we need to only focus on our own well-being, verstanden?" Dad said with a serious look to which I could only slowly nod still slightly in shock from the whole situation.

  As we rounded the corner into the main hall, we were met with a large group of those, things, just sitting there waiting for us.

"Fuck, we need to get out of here!" I yelled as Dad and I ran down another hall.

Our game of cat and mouse would go on for another hour or so before we finally escaped the building and headed back to my house to try and find Mom, Elias, and Lukas
