The two girls had all the pieces of parchment spread out, abandoning the books for now. They were overwhelmed by them, and were not going to be able to figure out how to decipher them in a single afternoon. The single parchments however, made more sense immediately, because they weren't letters and words.
They were blueprints. Instructions, all in drawings.
