1 Chapter 1: Alive again

The sun showered its magnificent brilliance upon the frosted forest; creatures of unique identity, big and small, emerged from their burrows and nest and into the white slivery floors of the Cryterian forest tentatively.

The spring season had finally returned, and with it, the promise of new grazings as the sun's warmth slowly melted the snow that covered the fields in a white blanket of ice courtesy of the unforgiving winter.

The spring fairies quickly gathered and attended to the flower buds that hadn't bloomed yet, singing and cooing the little buds with aspiration in their own tiny little language.

Birds chirping heralded the official coming of spring harmoniously, high among the branches of the trees like an orchestra as a passing breeze rattles the whole forest. The last of the chilling air of winter is making its way through the woods. It would be some time before the forest could experience such a cold, ruthless embrace.

Slowly the greenery of the forest will return in a month, and the Cryterian's full glory returning attracting humans, beastfolk, dwarves, and elves alike looking to acquire sustenance after being deprived for months.

The Cryterian forest is known for its perfect hunting spot for new hunters and adventurers alike due to the minimal threat the forest holds. The small tribes of Gnolls and goblins are primarily the highest monster threat the forest consists of, and both ranked no higher than an "E" rank in terms of their threat level. Human survivability is very high, and the fine animals and monster carcasses could fetch decent coins in the market. In hindsight, this moment's transition was as peaceful and safe as possible for the creatures living in this forest.

A herd of thorn-horned deers grazes contentedly on fresh grounds as the young fawns test the strength of their legs and play on a small open field. However, Not far from their location, careful sets of eyes watch the young fawns closely as they play.

There are very few animal predators in cryterian that would dare take on a herd of full-grown thorn-horned deer head-on, and even then, it would think twice. Those predators daring enough to try were pushed neither by pride nor desperation. Winter wasn't kind to anyone, and the scent of fresh meat will lure any hunting species to try their luck.

The saber prowler was just a fourth of the body size of the deer, and anyone able to see the feline predator against the deer could understand that if a fight were to happen, it would end with the stag's victory. No doubt.

The black fur and sharp yellow eyes were the feline's defining features and could easily be mistaken for a plain house cat if not for its elongated fangs sticking out both sides of its mouth. The sharp bone-like whip at the end of its tail and its slightly larger build than its town-dwelling kin furtherly makes it challenging to distinguish the two at first glance.

The feline watched the six fawns skip around the meadow from its tree, waiting for a chance to jump on one of the younglings. It has already set its eyes on one target, the smallest one, The Bambi of the group. Winter hasn't been kind to it and has left the feline hunter hungry and weak. It has no strength nor stamina for a prolonged chase; the weakest one would do for now to replenish some strength back.

Despite its size, the bite force of a saber prowler is strong enough to crunch through the meat and bone of a fully grown man's wrists. The little fawn will die shortly after its jaws close in on its neck, making it the perfect target for a quick dive and run.

The six fawns strayed further away from their herb, and five played roughly with one another and caused the weakest one to be pushed around.

Then an opportunity presented itself when the said five fawns outrun the saber's primary target after being thrown off balance by the rough play. Sensing a chance for a kill, it inches closer as much as the tree branch could allow it. A single jump over the fawn was all it needed for the kill. It just needed to be within reach.

The little cries made by the fawn as it struggles to follow them alerted an adult thorned-horn deer near them. It called over the young fawns, and they immediately reacted and returned to their herd. Now was the only time the saber could have a chance to capture its food.

With its ears perfectly down on the side of its skull and eyes solely focused on its selected target. The prowler's sharp claws left markings on the branch as it readied itself for a long jump. It positioned itself where it could easily fall directly on the fawn.

It could already smell the fresh warm blood of the fawn, its delicious scent made its stomach grumble, and its growl echoed loud enough for the fawns to be alerted of the danger above them. Panicking, the older fawns scrambled their way back to the herd leaving the limping fawn isolated in their haste.

With the conditions aligning to the feline's favor, every muscle in its body flexed outward as the feline drew all its strength to its hind legs, preparing to propel itself straight to its prey.

However...

Before it could launch itself out of the tree, an explosion of sinister aura filled the peaceful atmosphere of the entire Cryterian forest in a bone-chilling pressure.

Instantly its hunger and desire for food diminish, and its will to survive the horror that befell the forest drove every inch of its being on the feline's flight response. It immediately turned directions and jumped branch after branch seeking shelter for safety. The herd cried out a dreadful sound and ran in different directions, leaving the fawns confused and even more terrified. The animals and monsters that occupied the forest instantly fell into Madness and Despair. Running aimlessly, crying pitifully as the morning light was purged out and consumed with blood-red skies, a giant black orb that blocked the sun suddenly materialized for thin air.

The smell of fear and the anticipation of death's coming suspense the Cryterian forest unlike never before; the delicate balance that the creatures had thrived on for hundreds of years shattered in mere seconds.

Sensing a great evil approaching, the largest monster factions within the cryterian, the gnolls, goblins, and blood wolves, turned fiercely hostile, attacking and killing any living thing in sight. Flooding the forest floor in fresh blood and loitering it with the carcasses of the unfortunate.

As chaos seethed in amongst the tenants of the forest, its guardians, the spirits, felt their existence wane as the oppressing aura of great evils tainted their very existence. Thousands died within minutes of exposure to the entity's volatile presence traumatizing even the highest-tier spirits that cared for the forest and its inhabitants.

The black ooze above began to lower from where it blocked the sun's light. The massive orb of black-unknown substance descended upon the Cryterian forest. Its impact managed to shake the very foundation of the earth beneath, like a raindrop that splattered when it hit the ground. The perfect circular shape turned into a tidal wave of thick black ooze that engulfed everything in its way. Animals, monsters, and even spirits, none were spared.

Everything was devoured.

The forest was silent as the oozing threat converged into a singular being laying naked on the ruined fields of the Cryterian Forest. The figure seemed to wriggle in his slumber when leaves from surviving trees flew onto him and shifted to his side with a groan.

"Tumtum,...five more minutes.. I'll get your snack a little later." He asked before proceeding to suckle on his thumb and returning to sleep.

He felt the sharp end of his claw poking at the back of his throat, prompting a gag reflex. He felt the need to throw up and immediately sat up from the desolate ground he lay on, covering his mouth, gagging at the sharp intrusion.

"What the!!?? That hurt..." He mouthed as he rubbed his throat gently.

A blast of ice-cold air made him shiver, snapping him out of his mental rant. "HOLY!! Did I leave the windows open?" He rubbed his shoulder to warm himself and peeked over his left, expecting an open window. He expected wrong. To what he could see was nothing more than just broken down trees and a deserted, desecrated ground that was oddly moist and slimy.

His head circles with questions around the category of "What the fuck", "Why the fuck", and " How the fuck" as his overworked brain struggles to understand his current situation.

"What in the name of-..." Like a deer caught by a light on a highway, he froze midway through his sentences as broken imagery of his death flashed inside his head, sobering him from his earlier confusion.

"W-wait... I died. I'm...dead, but why am I?" He palmed his chest and stomach, remembering where he was stabbed multiple times. To his surprise, there was no pain or holes in his body. He stared blankly, absorbing everything around him as he looked around and remained silent for a whole minute before speaking again.

"Did I make it into heaven?" His eyes widen a few seconds after, and a smile that started small begins to grow on his face. It was a full-blown smile with sharp canines plastered when he spoke again.

"Wooohooo!! I made it to the better side!!! Yeah!!! Holy sh—iiieeermmm... I'm sorry." He bowed on his knees, screaming his apologies before smacking the palm of his hands together at the sky.

An image of a chubby orange tabby cat appeared in his head.

It sleeps without a care in the World with its stomach exposed after it ransacked the cabinet for kitty treats. It was his last memory of his beloved cat before leaving for work that day.

"Tumtum!! You better find yourself a new owner to take care of you and that greedy stomach of yours!! You're fat enough to survive a week without eating, but you need to work those begging eyes as you did to me to survive! Take good advantage of them!!" He smiled bitterly at the sky, recalling the most recent memory of a tabby orange cat barging into his apartment a few years before his death.

The chubby orange little devil-spawn may have left him more scars than he could count. He had always loved that little demon regardless.

[Ding!]

[The God of mischief and Trickery has replied to The Goddess of the Wild Hunt, "Crazy cat lady"]

"Mhmm??" Victor noticed a small icon box that popped out from his peripheral vision and scrutinized it in confusion. The floating icon was flooding with new messages, one notification after another, and consistent from one sender alone.

"What is this?" He poked the icon. He squeaked in surprise as the icon immediately enlarged and reached him at eye level. He read the words in the box, which confused him even more.

"What is going on? Are these people.... arguing?" He watched as the one-sided argument depth into insults and degradation he hadn't heard in his entire former life.

"Sheesh..." His eyes darted to the red circle with a prominent X on the right top side of the box."If I'm not mistaken..." He mumbled, and sure enough, the mysterious box disappeared.

"Okay. That was weird asf." He whispered and looked around as if trying to find a clue to what just happened. But then again, he was supposed to be dead, and everything can neither be heaven nor hell up to this point.

Which brought him to the first thing he should do. Founding out where he was and looking around, it was without a doubt he was in a forest. The problem was where exactly this forest was, and figuring it out would be first on his to-do list.

He tried to stand up and thought of walking around for a better view of the place. However, a feeling of something prickling at his skin made him aware of his body for the first time. It was something akin to sharp yet soft objects prickling him. A shiver ran up his spine as the same feeling prickled him at his forbidden jewels guarded by thighs.

Then there was a feeling he had never felt before. The vulnerability. The exposure. The nudity of his being never felt the same in the confines of his bathroom.

He was naked and not inside his bathroom but in the open. Blood rushed to his face, finally aware of his bareness as an impossibly high-pitch scream escaped him and covered himself. He stood awkwardly with a hand between his legs and an arm covering his chest.

He looked around and thanked the high heavens above that no one was around to see him in his naked form. He didn't understand why he could only react to his current state after 5 minutes of being awake from his supposed resurrection.

He was shocked and amazed that he undermined such an improper, inappropriate display for so long. What would his parents say if they saw him now? Even more so, what would anyone think if they saw him like this? A great deal of shame dropped on his shoulder. He's raised him with proper etiquette and manners. This was not proper of him.

He hunched down a little before running deeper into the woods, trying to find anything to cover himself up. But in his haste, he stepped on something. This brought a shock throughout his body, a pain almost equivalent to getting kicked in the sack with the peculiarity of originating on his arse. He jumped, hissing at the sharp pain that exploded behind his lower parts.

"W-what in the world did I just step on!?" He whispered, riding out the pain through controlled breathing.

He looked down at the source of his suffering; to his surprise and horror, it was a tail. He traced a hand behind him and found an additional joint where there was previously nothing.

It was his tail, and he was currently touching the base of it. All thinking processes stopped working in his head at sight and feel. The remaining screws and nuts turning in his head flew off their sockets, and all hell broke loose.

He gripped the tip of his tail and traced it to the base repeatedly with fierce eyes, not believing its sudden development. Which was located ironically right at the end of his tailbone.

He could see and touch it, but he still had difficulty believing it as he stroked along the length of his new tail.

"Wait-... What the fu-..!!!" It was like getting splashed by cold and hot water at different turns that kick-started his voice to work again.

"I have a TAIL!!! Why do I have a TAIL!!?? How is this even possible!?? Did I turn into a demon?? Or a f-furry? Oh, God! I don't know which is worse!!" His breath was labored as the panic set inside him. Beads of sweat began to trickle down from the side of his face, and as an instinctual reaction, he wiped his sweat up and hit something on his head. It was hard and short. It feels smooth for some reason too.

He put his hands on his head, and sure enough, he felt the same smoothness of the hardened object at the side of his head. Horns. The only thing he could think of as he traced it from his scalp to the tip. There has a set of horns protruding on top of his head symmetrically.

He looked at his hands like he found something unbelievable in the palm of his hand. And indeed he did, his nails were dark of color, and each end of his fingertips seemed like they could tear anything apart.

Furthermore, his previous skin tone of an unhealthy ghost white was replaced with a healthy glow of sun-kissed skin, so hot, it could melt popsicles!! His complexion paled slightly.

He didn't notice it earlier because everything, aside from stepping on his tail, felt normal to him. Like he had known this body his entire life and was nothing to be concerned about until he remembered his past self.

He clearly remembers that he was human all his life, with human parents and a human... body. The sight of this new body should have freaked him out, but there was a sense of growing calmness in the midst as well. Then he realized something.

He remembers so little of his past life, not entirely because of his shit memory, but because there wasn't worth remembering much. He remains silent for a while, scrambling his brain for memories other than his parents, an apartment, a cat, and work. But nothing comes to mind.

"Why can't I remember more?" He dishearteningly said, looking at his hands once more. He gulped. "D-did I turn into a d-demon for real?" He shakingly asked.

"Did I do something terrible when I was alive? I'm a devil now, so I probably did. Uwaahh!! I don't even know what I did in my life!!! Did I really deserves this!? This is so unfair!! Shouldn't I be informed what kind of a crime I did to deserve this?? I can't remember anything. Can anyone please to me what's happening??" He leaned his back against a tree, trying to calm himself. Asking for help that would never come-

[Notice!]

"Eepp!!!"A yelp escaped his lips as a sudden ring echoed in his head.

A mechanical voice resembling a woman spoke inside Victor's head. He covered his new and improved manhood again before speaking.

"Umm, who is this? And why do I hear you in my head? God? M-mary?" He asked, carefully looking around again.

[Hello, I am your support system, Amenah-Dehlia#242,533,644,635. Designated to be your AI for various system transactions and guide system during your streaming career!]

"Okay?....Y-you are my g-guide in my streaming? Career?" He said, giving up on rationalizing the oddity of his current situation.

The things that the mechanical voice said didn't make sense to him. Guide system? Streaming career? He wonders if he finally did go crazy, and everything he sees and hears is his brain playing tricks on him. Oddly enough, he also admits that it felt nice having to talk to someone, even if it was a disembodied voice in his head.

[That is correct, Mr. Streamer #765,999,327,673]

"C-can't you call me by my name? Mr. Streamer 763-..something is really bothering me. Is that okay?"

Victor's face distorted into confusion at the explanation. However, his attention gravitated toward the mention of Heroes. Doesn't that mean he wasn't alone in this place? He isn't the only one getting screwed over by some big cosmic corporate that's exploiting him in some way for their entertainment.

"These Heroes that you mentioned, does that mean... Is there someone else like me here? That means I'm not alone here in this place." He asked, hoping to find a kindred spirit with those people stuck in this place with him.

[Notice!]

[Correct, You are currently housing in this World with seven already established individuals who obtained the title of heroes. You are the designated new villain that must rampage throughout the continent and seize control of the World. Your role is to bring chaos to this World and death to the heroes of this realm.]

The automated voice of the woman scratches at Victor's ears as the information about his role and the seven heroes he needs to kill. He laughed nervously before asking again.

"I-is that like a roleplay? I mean, that's kind of an impossible thing to achieve, don't you think? World domination? I can't even hold a speech without throwing up on stage! A-and you want me to kill seven people? I don't even know where I am, and you want me to conquer this planet aside from murdering seven people!?"

"I ran at the sight of a cockroach in my bedroom and couldn't even step on the damn thing, let alone dream of killing anyone." There was a slight pause before he continued.

"Okay. That was a bit of a lie. My manager. He's on top of that list. BUT! I have never gone through with it, so it doesn't count. And World domination!? How would I even do that??" Victor's mouth yammered complaints and impossibilities until another ring echoed in his head.

Victor could practically hear the satisfaction in the robotic girl's voice, and it scared him at his core. "By versus, you mean w-we are going to battle one another? Like a friendly match? Like tennis, or basketball, or even boxing?" He asked warily, still hoping it was just a misinterpretation on his part. Everything up to this point was just a charade.

[Notice!]

[The versus match is a deathmatch, Victor gray. The winner takes all. It's one of the most popular genres among the multiverse deities. And among the top five categories, it ranks second place. With free-for-all being ahead by a small margin.]

"A deathmatch!?? They really are going to kill me!?" The shock of the news sends Vitor's heart palpitating vigorously. His eyes sharpen furthermore at the sudden adrenaline that rushes inside him. His claws stretch out to their limit in their full frightening curved glory. His hair and the fur on his tail stood up like spikes.

Victor was already running far away before he could notice the chat box exploding again with arguments at slurs. All of his senses were focused on escaping and evading the newfound threat, which was the truth of his situation.

Even if he remembers a little more from his past life, he was sure he was no fighter. He would fold when things got too rough and bend his knees for mercy. He has never won an argument once in his life, and this includes his cat.

He was an outcast, a loser in his childhood, and a pathetic lackey in his adulthood. He couldn't help but curse the gods that put him in this position even after death.

[Notice!]

[Are you perhaps hunting right now, Victor gray? As expected from a recommended doom Soul. However, conserving energy is highly recommended.]

The mechanical voice inquired. But he didn't care and kept running. He'd not know for how long but kept pressing on, no matter what the guide told him. It was only when he saw the sun was nearly setting again did he stop running.

"Haaahh-...haaah..ha oh gods...I-i...Haa..ha.." His lungs were burning when he finally made a stop near a riverbank, gasping for air as his entire body burned.

[Notice!]

[You are exhausted. Taking a moment of rest and letting your stamina recover is highly recommended. There are no hostile threats within 300 meters. It would take approximately 2.5 hours before you fully regain your strength.]

"Y-yeah,...Haaa-.. t-that s-sounds nice," he dropped promptly after agreeing to a rest. He fell face-first to the ground in his exhaustion.

He had never felt so much strain in his body until today. He wasn't an active person who did regular jogging or went to gyms. At his best, he would walk around his five-by-six-roomed apartment four times, and he'll be already greedily sucking the available oxygen around him.

[Notice!]

[Would you like to review your stats while resting, Victor gray?]

"Stats? What exactly is that again?" His muffled voice on the ground barely got registered by the system.

[Notice!]

[It is where you will see your current condition, race, level, skills, abilities, and traits. It resembles the same function in your World called "Status Bar" in RPGs and MMORPG games.]

Victor's brows twitched at the mention of online games. He never had the privilege to play online games when he was younger. Because of how dirt poor his family was, they couldn't afford the things most kids his age at that time had.

Now that he has grown up, the online games on his computer and the gaming console he managed to buy for himself felt lackluster. It confuses him more than he enjoys it. Moreover, having no one to play with or to teach him. It got boring quickly for him, and he never did touch it again after a few weeks of playing it.

"I guess. Open it, please." He did remember coming across some games with familiar words from what the system had told him.

Victor's face scrunched up at the long list of information. Everything on the list was foreign to him, and he did not know how to take it all in. But he did understand that he was a demon in some form. A hybrid demon. A hybrid cat demon beast thing, to be exact.

"What exactly is a Beastman?" He asked.

[Notice!]

[The Beastfolk or Beastmen are humanoid individuals possessing animal characteristics, and E'Lirio has five distinguished ethnic groups.]

Victor was intrigued at the mention of the five groups and furtherly asked the system of their history.

[The lizardmen claimed the marshland of Zahort in the west. The Wolfpacks in the Vengenra forest near Genrindenia city. The scattered tribes of Merpeople in the far south archipelago of E'lireo. The winged clan in the floating mountains of Sylvatori and the Horned-marauders in the dread dawn wastelands. Your current designated body is a customized demon with a rare beastfolk bloodline, making you a unique being in E'lireo.]

Victor's mind was swirling with the information presented in front of him. Everything that system is telling him leaves him speechless. Tribes? Floating mountains!? Fishpeople? The knowledge of this World, known to him now as E'Lirio, made him a little at ease. Knowing he has somewhat not the only one looking a little different from human standards.

Still, he was afraid to ask furthermore about his current bodily condition. But his new found curious nature gnaws at him for moments only before asking nonetheless.

"So what about my Demon part? Is there any difference from my World about demons here?" He asked. This Demon part was his concern. Is he gonna be evil by nature now since he was half-demon now?

[Notice!]

[Demons of this realm can take form depending on their needs. They evolved through the consumption of essence appropriate to the demon's mark of sin. Among all other racial classes in E'Lireo, Demons possess the highest affinity for magic, logically making them the most lethal and feared magical users in this World. However, most low to mid-level demons have meager intelligence. Making them incapable of using magic and relying heavily on their demonic instinct before their evolution to a higher-tier demon.]

"If I'm half-demon, does that mean I can do magic too?" A little part of him was excited about the prospect of using magic. He always has a soft spot for fantasy kinds of literature. He grew up with those kinds of stories in his childhood. They were the only solace he found in his lonely younger years.

[Notice!]

[Yes. You are capable of magic. However, you have low intelligence points to be able to learn, perform, and acquire a magical skill. It is recommended to put points into intelligence. Alternatively, you can consume essence point with the skill [Voracious Gathering], although targeting specific prey items are required to obtain desired stats.]

Victor looked over the dimming skies as the disembodied voice confirmed that he could use magic. His golden eyes twinkled with delightfulness and excitement at the mere thought of being able to do magic. This moment was exactly something he would read in a book, where the main protagonist discovers they were destined for something big in the story. But in Victor's scenario, he was the destined big baddie and probably meant to die at the end of this new life.

He stretched a hand up, clasping the vibrant orange skies as he steeled himself with a vow. "I won't die like the monster they want me to be. I'll live this life the way I want it. Just watch me. I get to have what I want this time around." Victor smiled and whispered with a look of determination.

This was real. This was his new life, and he won't be wasting it like before by following what others told him to. He would do the things his heart dictates to him. It was his turn to live the life he wanted, and no one will stop him. Even if it means avoiding the heroes like the plague!! There was no way in hell he'd be doing this ridiculous task.

Victor's declaration of disobeying the system finishes as the two deities watch their foolish little sponsees keenly as they watch him fall asleep in exhaustion.

[Ding!]

[The Sisters of Destined Fate are Smiling upon you.]
