Getting Fired

Su Li

Fu Jing has been looking at me strangely for half a day now.

She opened her mouth to say something, then ended up closing it.

"What happened?" I couldn't help but ask her.

She was startled when I suddenly asked.

"No..noth….nothing." She stammered.

Now that's suspicious. Fu Jing doesn't stutter generally. She does so when something is going inside her head and she doesn't want to let it out.

The last time she stammered was when she got wind of some scheme and our company was involved in a scandal after that.

An uneasy feeling craved its way all the way over my heart.

I was just about to ask her when someone informed me that Luo Mingze wanted to see me urgently.

I looked at Fu Jing suspiciously.

I was about to ask her strictly when I saw the corners of her eyes red.

I can't be anxious. I walked over to Luo Mingze's office who is our head and the only person who is just a position away from the CEO.

I knock on his door and enter when he gives me permission.

"You wanted to see me." I said being as polite as I could.

"Yes, I wanted to discuss something with you, please have a seat."

I did as he told.

"I won't waste your time and tell you about why I asked you here." He said and I held my breath.

"Ms. Su Li, we had a great time working with you, and I can say for sure that you have been one of the most diligent people I have ever seen." He paused and I don't understand why he is saying all of this.

And his next words shocked me to the core.

"I am sorry we can't work with you anymore. We had a pleasant time together."

What's happening? My brain can't process anything. I have thousands of questions to ask him but I stand there rooted to the ground.

"You are not joking, are you?" I know it is very rude of me to ask this question to my superior.

But I don't give a damn about it right now.

He just said that he is firing me.

"No, I am certainly not joking." He replied.

I am a very patient person, but right now I don't know anything.

If he thinks I am being rude then so be it.

"Can you tell me the reason?"

"You have not been working well for the past few months." He said as he typed something on his computer, maybe trying to end up the topic as soon as possible.

What kind of stupid excuse was that. Everyone knows if I had been working or not.

"You know that's a lie, right." I say in a trembling voice not taking my gaze away from him.

He looked up and met my eyes "You know how it works, it's just that someone doesn't want you to work anymore. It's not like I can do anything about it."

He said as if it is the easiest thing in the world.

My emotions are in turmoil.

It isn't just a job. It's everything for me, and I can't digest the news that I don't have it anymore.

Even though I was screaming in the inside, the words which came out of my mouth were incredibly calm.

"I understand."

I walked out of his office, grabbed my purse and drove myself home. I don't bother packing my belongings. I don't have much anyways. And I was not in the mood to care about anything.

I did my best to hold on, to understad that it's fine and everything is going to be okay. But even I didn't believed them.

Nothing was okay. Everything went downhill in just a day and I couldn't do anything save it.

I felt like my eyes were burning and before I could realize what's happening I felt tears running down my cheeks.

Crying can't help in anything. I should not cry but I don't know what else to do beside crying.

At this moment that's the only thing I can do.

After crying for god knows how long I glanced at my phone which had been ringing non stop.

I am in no mood to talk to anyone buy I still see in case I make someone worry. There were more than 10 missed calls from Qian Fan, Fu Jing and some were from my colleague.

I was about to call Qian Fan back when his name flashed on my screen.

"Hello." My voice came hoarse because of crying earlier.

"What happened?" He asked me.

"They fired me." I fought a sob that was about to spill out.

I didn't noticed how vulnerable I sounded.

"Are you sure that there was no misunderstanding?"

"I asked him but he indicated that I offended someone. He just said that someone was dissatisfied by me." I said.

"Don't worry, there must be some kind of misunderstanding. Let me talk to him."

He tried to assure me but I knew from Luo Mingze's tone that I can't do anything.

"There isn't. No one can do anything now. It's all over." I should not talk to him anymore otherwise I might end up saying something more sad.

I don't want him to worry about me.

I just want some time alone so that I could process what happened.

"Don't worry I will be fine after sometime. Trust me." I say before hanging up.

I never imagined I would be in this position one day.

Everything was going quite well, then suddenly everything became like this.

I can't understand. I don't know what to do now. It feels like I am back to college where I was unsure of everything.

Whether I would be able to do something in life or not.

Negative thoughts started brooming inside my mind. I can't help them. I might come out of this one day.

But right now I have fallen into a deep abyss , the one whose exit I don't think even exists.
