Chapter 111: Eating the Offering Food

Upon hearing Hiruzen Sarutobi's words, the ANBU ninjas were visibly moved. After all, in their hearts, Hatake Sakumo was always their ANBU captain.

The fact that their idol, under the circumstances of suicide, still received the treatment he deserved, brought comfort to their hearts.

Meanwhile, Danzo also received the news of Hatake Sakumo's suicide. Although there was a tinge of regret in his heart, he did not harbor much remorse.

Looking at Sakumo in the pool of blood, with years of ninja experience, Hiruzen could instantly confirm that Sakumo had truly breathed his last.

"Sakumo, why did you have to do this?" Sighed Hiruzen Sarutobi as he looked at Sakumo. Walking over to Sakumo's side, Hiruzen crouched down gently.

Picking up the letter beside him, he saw the bold letters written on the envelope, "To Kakashi Hatake from Sakumo." 

Glancing once more at Sakumo's closed eyes, Hiruzen sighed once again.

Approaching Kakashi, Hiruzen bent down and softly patted Kakashi's back. "Kakashi, your father has left. You must also take care of yourself. I believe, even in the afterlife, Sakumo wouldn't want to see you like this."

With that, Hiruzen placed the letter in Kakashi's hand. Kakashi looked up, his youthful face devoid of any expression.

He was unsure how to face the world now, and even with Hiruzen's arrival, he remained motionless.

Now, holding the letter in his hand, Kakashi's heart trembled again. The familiar handwriting brought a mix of anticipation and fear to Kakashi's heart.

Gritting his teeth, he opened the letter. He desperately wanted to know why Hatake Sakumo had made such a choice.

"Kakashi, by the time you read this letter, You and I will be separated forever."

"Dad wasn't a qualified ninja, nor a hero. So, don't bury Dad in Konoha's cemetery."

"After I pass away, bury me in the Hatake Clan's land."

"Before my final moments, the one thing Dad regrets is that I couldn't uphold the prosperity of the clan and leave you alone.

"From now on, you are the head of the Hatake clan. I hope you can lead the Hatake family to a new peak."

"You've to work hard, Kakashi!"

"And, always remember the words Dad said to you during our training together."

"Lastly, don't harbor resentment towards the village; all of this was Dad's own choice."

At this point, the contents of the letter abruptly end. Kakashi, long overcome with emotion, can barely read.

What's the use of being recognized by comrades as a great ninja?

In the end, he took his own life at home due to the failure of a mission to rescue a comrade.

Even though he can't live up to his father's words, even though he's in inner turmoil, Kakashi must still follow Sakumo Hatake's final wish.

Standing up from the ground, he tries to assume the posture of the Hatake clan head. Choking back tears, he says to Sarutobi Hiruzen:

"Hokage-sama, as my father wishes, I hope you can bury his body in the Clan's land."

Sarutobi Hiruzen's face is full of regret; he, of course, has seen Sakumo Hatake's letter. 

However, seeing it only deepens his guilt towards the Hatake Clan.

Upon hearing Kakashi's words, the idea of burying Sakumo Hatake in Konoha's cemetery is dispelled from his mind.

Although Sakumo Hatake knew too many secrets, since he wished to be buried in the Hatake Clan's land, there is no reason or inclination for Sarutobi Hiruzen to obstruct it.

With a nod, Sarutobi Hiruzen agrees.

The renowned ninja clan, the Hatake clan, may have declined, but the funeral of the former clan head, Sakumo Hatake, was still meticulously prepared for three days.

On the day of Sakumo Hatake's burial, the entire Konoha was plunged into sorrow and self-blame.

News of Sakumo Hatake's suicide had spread, leaving the villagers who had recently accused him filled with guilt and confusion.

Their accusations had led to the downfall of Konoha's protector, an undefeated war god. 

There would be no more fear of Konoha's White Fang, no more protection.

At this moment, these people felt panic and regret. However, all of this had nothing to do with the members of the Hatake clan.

Led by Hatake Kakashi, the remaining members of the Hatake clan silently carried Sakumo Hatake's coffin and left Konoha.

The journey from Konoha to the Hatake family's land took half a day. Along the way, not a single person used chakra. 

They were paying tribute to the legendary clan head, Sakumo Hatake.

Sakumo Hatake was laid to rest; that was the consensus among everyone.

After the members of the Hatake clan returned to Konoha that afternoon, the new clan head was already confirmed to be Hatake Kakashi.

All of this left the seven-year-old Kakashi bewildered. 

However, what no one knew at the moment was that on the night Sakumo Hatake was buried, something mysterious happened at the Hatake clan's land.

There was a tremor on Sakumo's grave as if something was about to burst out.

Finally, with a slight sound, a large hole appeared on the grave. The coffin, originally buried and covered, had been forcefully broken from the inside.

And that hole was formed by the impact of the coffin lid. Sakumo, who had been lying pale in the coffin, now sat up.

Although he had successfully feigned death for several days, the blood that had flowed out was not fake. 

Plus, not having eaten for four days had weakened Sakumo to the extreme.

Fortunately, his plan had not gone wrong. Sakumo Hatake looked around the surroundings, feeling a sense of relief.

Breaking open the grave had taken a considerable effort, and he slowly climbed out of the coffin.

Luckily, there were plenty of offerings in front of the grave. At this point, Sakumo Hatake didn't care much. 

After all, consuming his offerings, no matter how excessive, seemed insignificant.
