Yube's trouble

Shinigami. Sometimes they are also called God of Death. Their job is to control all deaths of the world, and they bear a lot of responsibility. If they can't do their job properly, they are often ignored in heaven and hell. I'm one of the Elites among Gods of Death....however....

'I can't believe I was punched like that by mere human!!!!!' Yube shouted. 'Argghhhhh!!!'

'Calm down Yube....' One of his fellow Gods of Death told me.

'No, I can NOT calm down! My pride....it hurts....'

'There there....' He pats Yube on his shoulder.

'Yube, Toga, can I talk to you for a bit?'

That was the boss.

'Sure...'

In his office.

'We have a new update on our deathlist this month. Please check all the names and make sure you collect all the souls.'

Both Yube and Toga got a copy of the list. They started reading the names from the top.

'Basuka Riho, Kouhei Tanaka, Sanae Tori.....'

Then he stumbled upon a familiar name.

'Hanako Yuuki....'

As he read her name aloud, his heart started to bang loudly. In a flash, her smiles, the way she walked, and the way she was so gentle when he was in his bird form passed through his brain. Although he's only been seeing her for a little while, he was captivated by her. Even though he didn't need to go to her place every day, he's been dropping by whenever he was around. Sometimes, it was enough just watching her do the dishes, and he would fly away to resume work again. His eyes started to water.

'Um....hey boss?'

'Yes?'

'We aren't allowed to change one of them...are we?'

'You know full well that you can't. Is there anyone you'd like to save?'

'Well, yes...is there any way?'

'No, you know you can't. It is the higher ups' decision.'

'I want to change their decision.'

'Well, you'll have to be quick because her death is set to be in about 3 weeks. Even if you do succeed in changing her fate, it is illegal.'

'Yes...I know...'

'That means when you do change her fate, you may be stripped off from being the God of Death. Also, it will affect the higher ups who let you have your way. Are you sure about this?'

Yube's body started to tremble. He loved his work as God of Death, and he never ever wanted to be stripped off work. If he didn't work as God of Death, his life would have zero meaning. It would be just better to fall into the dark pit of hell than getting stripped off from work. However, he also wanted to save Hanako. He really didn't want her to die and he scratched his head with agony.

'You have a think and decide what you want to do. You can both leave now.'

Both Toga and Yube bowed deeply and left.
