Chapter Sixteen

That day, Caitlin couldn't concentrate on the rest of her work. When the office closed, she went to the preschool to pick up Sultan.

He had so many stories to tell her about school, but she was occupied by the thoughts of everything that happened with her boss.

When they arrived home, she made him dinner and when she had bathed, she sat at the edge of her bed, lost in thoughts. She turned to look at Sultan who had fallen asleep beside her. She sighed and looked towards the window, then stood up and went to it. She stared out of the window for a while, and she couldn't forget what Mr Murray had told her.

'It's fine. I should've been patient with you. I'll give you a few days to think about it. Remember, your job could be on the line, and I understand how important this job is to you.'

He was really trying to black mail her. How did things get to this? She covered her face with her hands, feeling so defeated. After giving it much thought without a solution, she eventually fell asleep.

She had a terrible nightmare where something bad happened to her son, Sultan. He laid on the ground, dead in his own pool of blood. Caitlin was horrified. She tried to reach for him but she couldn't. Suddenly there was Mr Murray standing beside his dead body with a gun. He was smiling so sinisterly, then he slowly pointed the gun towards her…..and she woke up with a start.

She was sweating profusely and panting heavily. She turned to see Sultan sleeping soundly beside her and held him to herself, stroking his hair gently. She kissed his forehead and laid down again, but this time, she couldn't sleep. What did her nightmare mean? Was Mr Murray really a dangerous mafia as they rumored him to be? Would he come after her son if she refused his demands?! Fear gripped her.

She prayed within her that none of that would happen. A thought suddenly struck her. She had to quit her job, but she really needed this job. She searched earnestly for it and couldn't give it up. She was stuck between a tough choice and sighed, shutting her eyes and trying to rid her mind off her misfortune, but it didn't help.

The next day, she went to work after her usual routine. When she arrived, everyone stared at her and murmured things to each other. Caitlin didn't understand why they did, but she tried her best to ignore them. As she set up her table, one of the female staff approached her with her arms folded.

"So, I heard that you went out for lunch with Mr Murray." she said but Caitlin ignored her.

"Well, I just came to warn you to be very careful. Mr Murray is very nice and loves to spend his money on beautiful women but he's also very dangerous when someone refuses his orders. If you don't want to be on his black list, play your cards well, will ya?" she said with a cold smile and left.

Caitlin grew even more afraid now. It seemed that most of the female employees in the company were a victim of Mr Murray, and he had probably blackmailed them one way or the other. She tried to rid her mind off her fears and focus on work and also tried her best to avoid him that day.

Murray sat in his office, working on his laptop. He stopped for a while and relaxed a bit, putting his crossed legs on the table. He took a pack of cigarettes and took one stick from it, then lit it. He puffed it slowly, when the door opened and one of his hefty body guards came in.

"Sir, we've found something you might find very useful."

"Really? What is it?"

"Miss Caitlin has a male child."

Murray was shocked. He paused for a while, then puffed his cigarette again.

"Tell me more."

"We actually followed her home secretly on your orders. We've found out where she lives and also the school her son attends. He should be around three years old sir."

"Interesting." he said and sat up.

"Miss Caitlin clearly isn't married. I wonder how she got a child."

"We weren't able to find any useful information about that sir, but we'll try our best."

"Yes, do what you must. I need any information about her that I can get. It will make my job easier. She won't be able to escape me this time." he chuckled and puffed his cigarette again.

That day when work was over, she was about to leave when he approached her.

"Miss Caitlin. You didn't stop by at my office to say hi. That's so rude of you, but I'll let that slide by. Have you thought about our deal yet?"

"Sir….I really can't do what you asked of me. I can't do that."

Murray laughed.

"You better be careful with me miss Caitlin." he snickered and approached her, leaning closer to her left ear.

"I know a lot of things about you, you know." He whispered and Caitlin felt a sudden rush of rage in her spine.

"You don't know anything about me!" she said, agitated.

"I know that you have a son, and his life could be in terrible danger."

Caitlin gasped in fear and turned to him. Her face turned white with horror.

He smiled broadly and burst out laughing.

"You should see the shock on your face. It literally turned white!" he added, laughing so loudly.

"How did you know….." Her voice shook with fear.

"Well my dear, I did try to warn you. If you don't do as I say, the life of your son will pay the price."

Caitlin starred in fright. Her dreams were slowly coming true. She rushed into the taxi to get her son and when she arrived at the school, she went into his classroom to get him. When she saw him safe and playing with one of the teachers, she rushed to him and hugged him in tears.

"Oh Sultan! I'm so glad you're alright." she sobbed and Sultan smiled.

"I'm fine mummy. I was just playing with the teacher." he added as she released him.

The teachers were surprised to see how sober Caitlin was, but they shrugged it off as having a bad day at work. As they headed home, Caitlin held Sultan tightly. She became extra vigilant and was ready to protect her son if there was harm on their way. Sultan noticed her clinginess and thought she had missed him after several hours at work. He held her in a warm cuddle as they sat in the taxi.

Kane sat in his study, thinking about Caitlin and Sultan. These days, it was becoming so difficult to get rid of them off his mind. He missed Sultan so much, his warm cute smiles, his adorable voice, his innocence, and he missed Caitlin as well. His feelings for her had developed so much even though she had hurt his feelings and he still thought about her a lot.

He was returning to Allensouth soon, yet he didn't feel like leaving. For some unknown reason, he felt like Caitlin and Sultan were in danger and needed his help, but then he was reluctant to go after her again. He didn't want her to hurt his feelings, and he didn't want Sultan to be hurt as well.

He couldn't forget how much he cried when he left. He had promised Caitlin to leave them for good and he couldn't break his promise now. It was such a difficult choice as he battled in his mind whether to leave or go after them again. He sighed and rubbed his head in frustration. Darian saw how stressed his master was and shook his head sadly.
