1 The Seeker

Is asking for another chance futile, why can't I live my life in peace? All I ever wanted was to have someone to stand by my side. I guess everything is fleeting, time, people, loved ones and life.

Nothing lasts forever, nothing does, and I'm the same. In this massive world, how does a little nobody – who doesn't even hail from this hell, supposed to live? I've learned one thing though; the world is truly amazing. Hidden behind the conspiracies, hypocrisies, and greed as well as lust, lives hope. Humans only act as the wind to disturb the peace. Yet behind, lies another plain, a place devoid of people; a place where only gods and higher beings have the right to rest; heaven.

I've always hated humans, and I still do. I hate them with a passion. I guess my situation is a direct repercussion from that hatred. I mean, look at me, I'm standing on the edge of the highest building in town. Everything around lights with a million flames, the windows, and lights from the buildings below feel as if the stars have descended from their throne. The wind blows harder and faster with each breath I take, I've had enough. This act of rejecting reality is my last stand against the people who've done me wrong.

I wish I was born better; I wish I had that special someone, but happiness isn't in view for me. All I can see is the never-ending abyss called my life, a destiny that was supposed to be bright and filled with joy. Alas, I've served my days, I've lost too much time; frankly enough, I just want to sleep – and never wake up.

A boy, a man, someone unimportant, just like the ones before him, has decided to end it all. The building on which he stands has stopped construction five years ago. The place is deserted, no one cares for it, an ugly eyesore. The purpose it serves now is to act as the final gateway from life to death. Many, ranging from young adults to middle-aged men and women alike, come here to end it all. The first and last step. Welcome to the tower of death. Every day, every night, every month, someone new, someone fresh comes here in hopes of finding a quick and painless death. Sadly, this is where it all changes, the tower of death isn't a tower meant for people to jump off and die, but a bridge linking them to another life, a better life. For too long have people suffered, for too long have they given up before trying, today, the gods above have decided to stop it all. A new idea, a new face, a new life, a new possibility, and endless outcomes. On this day forward, the man who now stands on said tower will become the harbinger who saves others, he who hates humans will become the one who saves humans for he and he only knows how to save his fellow comrades.

'Time has come for me to end it all, I wish the world was a better place.' The building screamed thanks to the wind, the last step taken. 'Finally, the façade of my existence will be lifted, I shall finally stop living, my short trip is coming to an end,' he jumped. 'I'm flying, I'm finally free, the air feels refreshing, the silence is soothing, sadly the ground is coming up. As I said, nothing ever lasts forever.' A loud crash followed by silence, the body felt weightless.

"Do you hate humans that badly?" a voice spoke mysteriously.

"I do," the mind wandered around a tunnel.

"What would you do if you had the power to change someone else's life."

"I'd show them that the life they've lived so far is only an illusion. There's something much greater, beyond that façade, the ideal world, the ideal place, and the ideal life."

"Where is that ideal life?"

"Neither is it ideal nor is it perfect, the life I will show them is a life devoid of regret but filled with failure. A life that is worth living and not some repetition of eat, work, sleep."

"How will you accomplish that?"

"I don't know, I'm a mere human, I've regretted everything. I only wish I had the opportunity to save someone else who might go through the same thing as me."

"If you had the power to do such a thing, will you try and find the answer? The answer about what it means to be alive, the answer that all have been seeking, the answer to the question that will never be answered."

"If I had the power to change the life of one person, I'd consider my life to not be in vain. However, I've already made the choice to leave this earth, this hell, this place."

"You're wrong, you've been chosen, not to be a hero, but to be a savior. Not one who defeats monsters and slays dragons, but one who saves people in distress, one who saves people from themselves, the one who fights against the greatest foe of all; human emotion."

"Wrong, I'm not a savior nor will I ever be one, I'm but a foolish boy who hates humans. I've never held any empathy to others, I view humans as toys to be left alone in the void."

"The one who hates humans knows their heart better – you and you only can save the countless souls who scour the earth in search of an answer. May they be living or dead, my child, you will help save them all. This isn't a choice nor is it a blessing, it's a curse, the curse to carry the burden of others. Your hatred for humans has given rise to this, and you and you alone can carry that weight. Heed my words carefully; the one who hates humans is the one who saves them. Now rise, you've got a job to do, find the answer you've been seeking for. When the time is right, I shall come to fetch you, for now, live, temporary as it may be, LIVE."

"Cough, cough." Laid on a bed, he awakes. Stuck inside a white room with nothing but a window painted in white, he wakes. The journey now begins, the journey to find the answer to the question that no one knows. What does it mean to be alive?
