1 The Strange Children

' That apostrophe means thoughts (or quotes, you'll be able to tell as I have made it obvious to tell the difference between thoughts and quotes)

*~\_ that means journal entry

Melody White and Tom Riddle were polar opposites. Melody was a very cheerful child and was friendly to everyone. Tom, well, he never showed any emotion and was mostly quiet. Excluding the times where Sarah was found floating in mid air or when Billy's stuffed bear was found in the toilet. There were many more incidents, but that would take an eternity to explain.

Another difference between Melody and Tom was that Melody knew her parents and heritage. She was only brought to the orphanage at the age of seven, though one couldn't imagine why whoever brought her chose Wool's Orphanage of all places. Also, people always came to adopt Melody, but for some strange reason, she'd decline every single one of them. Another strange fact about Melody was that she hung out with Tom, which caused the others to look at her as if she'd grown a second head or something. Melody didn't understand why the other kids didn't like Tom, even without the accidental magic. So one day, at the age of nine, Melody began telling Tom all about the wizarding World, from proper etiquette, to different types of people, giants, and much much more.

Tom acted like he didn't believe a word of what she was saying, but in truth, he was hopeful for the day he'd go to Hogwarts. Deep down, he always knew something was different about him. Something that gave him power over the others.

Well, except for over Melody, as she also had many odd moments.

Once they turned ten, Melody mentioned old wizarding families and their rings and titles. Melody had two as her mother and father both came from two different wealthy families.

Then when Melody turned eleven in the May of 1937, a man named Dumbledore came. He wore very odd robes. 'Like a wizard trying to dress as a Muggle,' according to Melody.

It took around fifteen minutes for Dumbledore to convince Mrs Cole that he was visiting and had an urgent matter to discuss with Tom and Melody.

Of course, by the time he came to do the actual explaining, Tom and Melody said that they already knew everything. So the only thing was to go to Diagon Alley.

—————————————————————————————After Diagon Alley————————

Tom had to admit, he was a little jealous that Melody didn't need the Hogwarts orphan's fund as she already had money. But he quickly forgot that jealousy as September rolled around. Mrs Cole's daughter drove them to King's Cross, and saw them off at Platform 9. Once she left, Melody and Tom went through the wall and into Platform 9¾.

Like Dumbledore and Melody had described, a scarlet coloured train was what met them. Dozens of families were ushering their children onto the train, and many hugs were exchanged as students boarded the train. Melody and Tom found an empty compartment quickly, which was where Tom started to ask last minute questions. Despite him not liking Melody very much,(in his opinion, she was way too talkative) it didn't mean her knowledge wouldn't come in handy.

"Hogwarts has many secrets and secret passageways. They're useful if you want to get to classes on time, but sadly I don't really know where those are," Melody said once they sat down.

"What about the common rooms?" Tom asked curiously.

"The Slytherin's common room is in the dungeons, you say a password to a certain empty wall and the entrance forms. The Hufflepuff's is by the kitchens, but I'd rather not reveal how to get in for their own privacy. The Gryffindor and Ravenclaw common rooms are both on the sevenths floors or towers. To get into Ravenclaw, you answer a riddle given by the doorknob—"

Tom looked a little puzzled. "The doorknob?"

Melody nodded. "My grandparents always complained about that, although they could answer the riddles no problem. The Gryffindor common room is behind a certain painting, you need to say a password to that painting to get in. But the passwords change every year. I'm not exactly sure where the Head's dorm is, all I know is that it requires a password to get in."

"Wait, how do you know where every common room is?" Tom definitely didn't think that was supposed to be common knowledge. Melody laughed lightly. "Each member of my family, from parents to aunts to great uncles and grandparents, were either in Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff—"

Knock knock!

Melody and Tom looked at the open compartment door, where a pale blonde haired boy was standing. Probably a Malfoy... Melody thought.

"Mind if I sit here?"

Melody shrugged. "Go ahead."

The boy sat down beside Tom, across from Melody. "My name's Abraxas Malfoy, you?"

"Tom Riddle," Tom muttered.

"Melody White," Melody said clearly. I think I forgot to mention, Melody's wand is made of Laurel and Unicorn hair, 13½ inches, and Tom's is Yew, Phoenix feather, 13 inches.

"Oh, your father's Charles White, right?" Abraxas questioned, suddenly a little more intrigued.

Melody nodded, not sure where this was going.

"Which House are you both hoping for?" Abraxas looked as if he had just noticed that Tom was there.

"Hmm.. I don't really know, but I've heard that the Gryffindor common room is nice and so are the people in Gryffindor. No offence to other Houses by the way," Melody added quickly.

Tom, however, had a clearer answer. "I think Slytherin suits me best out of the four."

"Indeed, I think second hand does suit you best," said a voice. Melody inwardly cringed. I can already tell this is going to go downhill..

"You got a problem with it?" Melody said sharply. Anyone who makes fun of others for fun is never a good sign.

"Second hand, if not third or fourth is only for lesser beings and peasants, not people like you, White," said the person, sneering for a minute. Melody looked at Tom then herself, who was wearing clean new robes. "You're wrong."

"Lestrange, leave it," Abraxas cut in, then turned to Tom and Melody. "That's Cygnus Lestrange. He thinks himself above everyone else."

"Your purity is a joke. Malfoys aren't pureblood, you still marry half-bloods," Lestrange pointed out, in Melody's opinion, rather rudely. "You could do with way better company, White."

"No thanks," Melody said coolly. "I look on the inside. After all, my family motto is, Never Judge a Book by its Cover."

"True, huh. Guess I'll leave you to find the wrong sort for yourself. Don't say I didn't warn you."

And just like that, Lestrange left them all alone.

"Don't listen to that guy, he's pathetic anyway," Abraxas reassured them.

So the three tread on lighter and safer topics for the remaining several hours of the journey.

Unknown to Melody and Tom however, their journey hadn't even begun.
