Rick convinces Beau to take him along when he leaves town -- thus working his way into Beau's dangerous life on the run -- and perhaps, into his heart, if Beau can come to grips with the fact that Rick is half his age. “The first thing you need to know,” Beau said, once they’d moved the furniture to the sides of the room, “is to focus. You need to read your opponent, looking for tells about what his next move will be.”

“Meaning?”

“If he’s going to punch you in the gut, he’ll probably look there, if only for an instant. Or he’ll tense one leg it he’s going to kick out with the other one. You might have a matter of seconds to pick up on it, but it’s all you need.”

“He’d be doing the same with me.”

Beau nodded. “If he’s good, he will be, so try to think about what you plan to do without looking at the targeted area before you strike.”

“So I’d be hitting blind.”

“No. You’ll have a split second to go from thinking to action, rather than telegraphing what you’re going to do. Next, whenever possible, aim for the head, a punch, a push, anything to get him to back off so you can run.”

Rick frowned. “I want to learn how to fight him.”
