Chapter 36

Dinner was as good as they had expected. Dessert came as a surprise—to Rick. Beau had let the restaurant know, when he made the reservations, that it was Rick’s birthday, so the waitress didn’t ask if they wanted dessert. Instead, she went into the kitchen, coming back carrying a small, but lavishly decorated, cake with nineteen candles circling the edge.

“You have to be kidding me,” Rick said, his eyes lighting up. Then, he ducked his head in embarrassment when the waitstaff began singing ‘Happy Birthday,’ with some of the other customers joining in.

“Now,” Beau said after the singing had stopped, “it’s officially official. You’re nineteen and counting—when you blow out the candles.”

Taking a deep breath, Rick did, at which point the waitress handed him a knife. Rick cut two slices, for him and Beau, then asked if he could take the rest of the cake home. The waitress said of course he could, so when they finished eating, she put what was left into a box.
