Chapter 27

When they were back in the car, Beau suggested they eat lunch at the same place they’d had dinner the previous night. “That way you can talk with the manager about a job.”

The same woman was at the cashier’s desk. She saw Rick and immediately smiled and beckoned.

“I wondered if you’d come back,” she said. “I told Mr. Green about you. I’ll let him know you’re here while you two find a table.”

Beau and Rick did, and had already ordered, when a middle-aged man approached them. “You must be the young man Pattie told me about,” he said to Rick. “As soon as you’ve finished eating, come by my office and we’ll talk. By the way, she didn’t tell me your name.”

“Rick. Well, Richard Field, sir.”

“Nice to meet you, Rick. I’ll see you soon.”

The minute he left, Rick leaned in, saying, “If I’m supposed to be your son, which is what we told her, how come we have different last names?”

“Second marriage,” Beau replied. “You were my ex’s kid from her first one.”
