Chapter 15

“This thing is little,” Rick protested.

“It’s also damned good for a beginner.” That said, Beau went on to teach him the basics of how the gun worked, then let him practice by shooting at one of the bull’s-eye targets painted on the barn wall.

“For a beginner, you’re not too bad,” Beau told him at the end of the session. “You have a good eye.”

Rick practically glowed at Beau’s praise. “Do I get to keep it with me, the way you do yours?” he asked.

“I have a holster back at the apartment for it, but no, you won’t be carrying unless I think it’s necessary.” He paused, giving Rick a serious look. “Like tonight. Just in case.”

Rick’s face lit up. “I’m going with you?”

“Yep. It’ll be your last chance to back out of traveling with me. If you can’t handle what’s going to happen, then we go our separate ways afterward. Understood?”

Rick nodded. “Understood.”

“You stay right here and don’t move until I tell you to,” Beau told Rick, his words more of a command than a request.
