Despite him being on his mount and leading the assault, the actual troops that followed him were just foot soldiers. Archers and the cavalry, which was the strongest contingent of his entire army, were left behind. And it was all according to Marcius's plan.

Marcius's warriors clashed with the already broken and chaotic ranks of the bandits in front of them. Many sections of the fortified walls surrounding the bandits' camp had been blown off by the earlier bombardment from the catapults. And thus, the advancement of Marcius and his soldiers was not deterred in any meaningful way.
