Jack didn't expect Ian to understand considering that Ian might never have meant marriage. A divorce didn't mean that his relationship with Scarlet was over. He still had some connection to her so when he saw a leech like Ian getting close to her, he had to step in to protect her.

"I will ask once more, how much do you want to stay away from her?" Jack asked. 

"Your life," Ian repeated once more. "The answer is not going to change. At the moment, I have no intention of leaving her side so run along back to the woman you picked. You don't get to play the role of a good husband now. A little too late for that, don't you think?"
