DAN & RAY

Dan was about to open his room's door when Ray's voice caught him off guard. 

"I am sorry about Sophie, man." 

Sophie. It felt like forever since Dan heard that name uttered in his presence. He knew his best friends were careful not to mention her name around him these days. They were mindful of his feelings, of what happened to him and his longtime girlfriend now turned ex-girlfriend. 

Dan looked and smiled at Ray. "Why are you sorry about it? There is nothing to be sorry for. Things happen."

Ray put his hand on Dan's shoulder. "I just didn't ever expect that you and Sophie could break up. It was impossible."

"Maybe in another universe. In this one, it happened." Dan shook his head, all the while looking at the farthest window in the hall. 

Ray leaned on the wall behind him and asked Dan, "Do you still remember the time we fought over who got to take Sophie on a date?"

Dan nodded. "Of course, I remember. I won."
