Chapter 2 THE RUBY-EYED WOMAN

Chapter 2: The Ruby-Eyed Woman

THE NEXT DAY, there was a car accident in Manhattan; the car was destroyed, and when the ambulance crew arrived, they extinguished the fire and discovered a burned-to-death body.

After an investigation, the NYPD determined that the body belonged to Miss Diana Barrett of the Barrett family.

...

A week later, Raven Carson and Lilith Martin appeared in the memorial hall. Everyone knew Raven was Diana’s fiancé and the other was her friend.

The best golden silk nan wood coffin, surrounded by white and yellow chrysanthemums, is placed in the center of the hall.

Diana’s relatives greeted Raven and Lilith when they saw them.

The Barrett family is like a royal family in NYC, with hundreds of close relatives and distant relatives, but none of them went forward to request that the coffin be opened to see the last image of their beloved Diana.

Diana’s death was tragic.

After a few moments, the Barrett family elder waved his hand to allow people to take Diana’s coffin to the cemetery to begin her burial. Then there was a loud noise from outside, and everyone turned to look behind them, only to see a mature and handsome man approaching them. Reporters surrounded him, and camera flashes illuminated him.

Diana’s ghost floated in mid-air, and her eyes widened as she saw the man appear. Her hollow gaze shone with a star-like glow.

Back to the bafflement of the people inside the hall, they knew the man. He was the boy who disappeared six years ago, named Heinrich Davis.

Diana had not expected to see him again, but it appears that fate has led the man to see her one last time.

Heinrich’s handsome and cold face drew everyone’s attention, and he went straight to the Barrett family’s old man and bowed respectfully.

“Mr. Barrett, I’d like to see Didi,” he said.

Chairman Barrett cast a hard look at Heinrich. “What are you doing here?! You are not welcome in here!”

“Mr. Barrett, I just wanted to see Didi,” he said again, his fist clenched, “I don’t believe she died like this. I left her six years ago, as you requested. But this is not the outcome I want!” he exclaimed, his heart churning with rage.

Mr. Barrett’s chest tightened, and he let out short gasps, prompting Mrs. Barrett to dash to him and stroke his chest to calm the old man.

“Hon, just give Heinrich a look at Didi... Everything is over; we can’t go back in time in this reality,” Mrs. Barrett explained.

Mr. Barrett gave Heinrich a stern look before agreeing to open the coffin.

Heinrich’s cold eyes turned fierce and terrifying when he saw the dark bones inside.

“Who said she was Diana?” he hissed, turning around and looking at everyone at the funeral. “She isn’t!” He yelled angrily.

Diana, the half-empty ghost, smiled bitterly and shook her head.

Why did he appear now, after she had died?

Would she have let Raven take advantage of her and die tragically if he hadn’t said goodbye?

Diana couldn’t tell what mood Heinrich was in based on the dramatic change in his expression.

She was adamantly opposed! She does not want to die just yet! But Raven brutally murdered her and severed her heart, and the demon was concealing the woman he loves?

Everyone was terrified as they watched the imposing Heinrich, who looked like a roaring lion at the scene.

“Heinrich! What exactly are you doing? Are you trying to make a scene at my daughter’s funeral?” Mr. Barrett was trembling with rage and exhaling quickly.

Heinrich gave him a cold stare. “Would I have left her if you hadn’t brought our company down in the first place? Would Diana be cold and ugly if I hadn’t left her?!”

Mr. Barrett scolded Heinrich and glared at him angrily. “Heinrich! When you were young and didn’t understand things, you can now understand the mall’s rules from the ground up, and it’s either your family lost, or we acted on their behalf!”

Heinrich nodded and laughed sarcastically. Then he cast a cold look at the old man.

“If you can’t even care for your own daughter, Mr. Alfred Barrett, how do you deserve to be a father and head of the family?”

The old man fainted from the weight of his rage upon hearing this. Fortunately, he had the support of his wife.

Raven, who was watching the scene, stepped forward and said, “Mom, hurry up and get father to the hospital. I will handle Didi’s funeral.”

Mrs. Kesha Barrett looked gratefully at Raven. She saw the sadness in her son-in-law’s eyes.

Diana hovered in mid-air, staring at Raven Carson’s hypocrisy. Her hatred drove her to approach him; she attempted to slap him, but her hand only passed through the man’s face.

After a few moments, Diana noticed her coffin being transported to the cemetery by Raven’s orders.

She witnessed Heinrich’s tall body fall to the ground. She didn’t have time to explain Heinrich’s problem. Her soul seemed to be drawn to one location by a strong magnetic field.

Suddenly, she noticed a black Porsche rushing to the opposite lane, facing a large, oncoming truck that crashed into the guardrail.

The car’s windshield shattered, and a red-dressed woman slammed into the railing and bounced into the middle of the lane like a withered flower.

All of the vehicles around them came to a halt, and people emerged in horror.

Diana looked at the woman lying on the ground with blood flowing from the corner of her mouth, her pupils shrank violently, and the woman looked almost exactly like her—with the same height, body shape, and skin.

Too late to accept it all, she watched as the beautiful woman floated out of the woman’s body that was lying on the ground, who looked exactly like her, except for the woman’s ruby eyes.

The scarred corpse on the ground sucked her in as the ruby-eyed woman smiled softly at her and left with a beam of light.

In the hospital, the rescued and operated woman finally woke up. Her gaze was drawn to the vast expanse of white, and her thoughts gradually returned to the car accident scene.

Diana watched as the woman who resembled her was in a car accident, and her soul escaped from her body.

Rey Tilde entered the room wearing a white coat and a record book in his hand, standing in front of the hospital bed and staring at the woman on the bed.

“How are you feeling now, Miss Eloise Rodriguez? Headaches?”

“Are you talking to me?” Diana blinked her eyes and reached out to support her brow.

“Miss Rodriguez, you were hit in the head and operated on,” Rey furrowed his brows. “I’d like to know how you’re feeling right now.”

Diana was stunned, and her thoughts raced: wasn’t she dead? She witnessed other people involved in car accidents and other people’s souls floating out of their bodies.

Later, she was sucked by the corpse lying on the ground, lost consciousness, and awoke in this room.

“Is this heaven, Sir?”

“Ms. Rodriguez, I see you spoke very clearly, and you didn’t show any discomfort, so it shouldn’t be a big deal,” Rey said.

She reached out to grab the doctor’s white coat as he was leaving.

“Where am I? Am I still alive? Who are you?”
