1 Introduction

"Once in a month when the pale moon rises, any who venture in the night will meet their demise." That is how the legend of Portsmouth, Virginia goes. There are tales of beasts that drain the blood out of people and leave them for dead, but the culprits are never found. Tales of beasts that howl at the full moon, scaring away any who come near. For Jayce, it was just a story. She moved to Portsmouth at the age of sixteen from Washington and wasn't afraid of the stories that she was told. Jayce wasn't normal herself. She knew that there were different beings on Earth just as different as herself. Her parents and little brother knew her secrets only because of the reason why she had to have an amputation just above her left knee. Jayce hid the fact that she had an amputation with a prosthetic and she was pretty good at using it like a normal leg.

Jayce was also different in the fact that she had snow white hair that stopped halfway down her back. She took extra time to dye it black so that she didn't stand out, but her hair often rejected it. It resulted in random white streaks that popped out in the black that she hated. She didn't like standing out, especially when she was in school. She believed that she was already different enough. The only people that knew her biggest secret were her mother, father, and little brother -Mason. Her biggest secret was that she was born with long white wings with a few black feathers. As she grew, they grew as well. She hid them by wearing jackets with built in pockets to hold them however she folded and placed them. She also had telekinetic-like abilities that she tried her best not to use. She had an accident that caused her to lose most of her leg, but no one spoke about it. She wasn't embarrassed about the accident, but it caused them to have to move. She felt bad for uprooting her family's life to keep her out of an experimentation.

Jayce and her brother, Mason, started a new high school in Portsmouth, Virginia. They were already quiet people, which made them nervous about starting a new school. It meant that there could be more bullies than the last school they had. Neither of them wanted to get bullied again. Jayce tried her best to protect her brother, but he was becoming a rebel child. She was still good at keeping an eye on him, but she understood wanting to experience things that they weren't exactly allowed to experience. She still tried her best to make sure he was safe. Moving to a new place was hard for everyone, but they tried their best to make their life in their new area.
