Chapter 79

“Pretty sorry, or just a little sorry?” At this point, he was only teasing Kenna. He’d already forgiven her, just as he had for the knife wound. It was impossible not to. She seemed so hurt and scared. Aged by it and yet still a child. Still adorable, innocent in her own way, and very much a young girl. He couldn’t be angry with her. It would’ve been like getting mad at a hungry orphan who asked for seconds at dinner.

She fidgeted in her seat a little, but nonetheless managed to form a reply. “Reallysorry.”

“Apology accepted.”

Kenna sat curled up in the passenger seat of the RV, staring inconspicuously out at a family. Five children, two parents, and one grandparent had all arrived in a big, ugly RV and parked right next to them. The group was busy toasting marshmallows and hotdogs over an open bonfire, and they were laughing and telling stories. Whatever was going on in her head, she kept it to herself, content just to watch the strangers having a good time.
