163 A LAST KISS

[LUCA]

Enemies were pouring down the streets from the outer bailey and into the town.

Bodies — innocent, civilian bodies — were scattered on the streets. Doors were opened and ransacked by the invaders. A few town guards were trying to fight them, but years of only patrolling the streets without a shred of battle experience did not prepare them for the ruthlessness of the golden-skinned foreigners. They fell quickly.

"Attack!" I commanded with the full intent to kill. Fighting the real enemies was easier since we didn't have to worry about not hurting them.

If there were so many here, how many more could there be inside the palace, which was right next to the woods where the enemies infiltrated?

We'd been careless. No security had been assigned to watch the edge of the woods, and now we're going to pay for our negligence.
