1 The Chosen Heir

I laid in my tent, staring off into space boredly. It was the middle of the night and the exploration camp was relatively quiet except for the quiet chatter and the crackling of a fire outside.

We were exploring a labyrinth that had been discovered in the UK recently. The thing that made it such a big deal is the fact that this was like no other underground stronghold or castle we've found before. The doors were made of cement and were at least ten feet thick in places. Not to mention each half of the door was thirty feet at the apex. But the odd thing was that inscribed at the top of the doorway, a Latin phrase was carved into the gates.

It read: "The nisi dignis domare"

Which in English meant "Only Those Worthy May Tame The Beast"

No one knew what it meant by beast and no one was able to figure out, Because no matter what anyone did. No equipment or man power could open or break the door. I shook my head and laid rolled over, finally going to sleep.

I woke up in a valley in the midst of a sunny and calm day. It honestly brought me to a very calm state. I stood up and looked around. The valley looked to go on for miles without end.

"This is a very nice dre—" I began to say but my voice was quickly cut off by a rhythmic pounding that shook both the air and ground around me.

I looked behind me in the direction of the sound and came face to face with a large reptilian head with long curving horns and deep deep green eyes that seemed to hold a deep knowledge.

I was so lost in my thoughts and those eyes that when the creature blew air out it's nose at me it caused me to let out a yelp of surprise. I watched as a smile formed on the muzzle of the creature. As it backed its head away I looked on in awe as I realized this creature was something only told in old folk and fairy tales. Before me sat a massive scarlet red dragon.

"I'm surprised you are not cowering in fear at the sight of me? You are either extremely strong willed or stupid?" A feminine voice boomed from above me.

I looked up at the dragon and shook my head, "I just admire your kind. It isn't the Medieval Ages anymore. Dragons are actually more admired than feared now."

The dragon tilted it's head curiously, "Why is that?"

I shrugged as I sat down, "I guess times changed. People started to fear different things after your kind turned more into legends than real beings."

"Well that explains quite a lot." The dragon said as it laid down, looking down at me intently.

"Why did you guys disappear in the first place?" I asked as I stood up.

The dragon sighed sadly as she looked off in the distance, "We left by request of a king that wished to save our kind from extinction. Before that we had been hunted by knights for sport and used for entertainment in colosseums. The gates your camp is situated by is one of the eight that exist. Each continent holds one in the most remote and dangerous places on the planet. And in order to make it so that no just anyone could get into the labyrinths, Merlin made it so that only people that I found worthy could enter."

As I listened I put two and two together with a dumbstruck look, "Why me?"

"Because you are the only person that is pure both in heart, soul, mind, and spirit. I have showered the globe to find someone worthy to unlock the gates and set my kind free."

"I'm not pure. No one is truly pure in every way." I said as I said shaking my head.

"And you saying that made me believe even more that you are the perfect person to become the first knight for the new Order of Dragons." The dragon said with a smile.

I suddenly felt my mind start to become fuzzy, "I think I am waking up." I looked up at the dragon, "I never did catch your name ma'am?"

The dragon laughed and bowed her head slightly, "I am Dracisa Valderia. And I am the first Dragon Queen."

I stood up and bowed to her majesty, "I am Charlie Pendragon Balladeen."

Dracisa smirked and brought her head down, "Come to the gates our king and bring back the kingdom your ancestor Arthur Pendragon once ruled."

Dracisa drew her head away and I was about to ask about a million questions but I threw up my arms as my body was consumed by fire.

================~<•>~================

I awoke in my bed with the last thing Dracisa had said repeating in my mind over and over until faded off like an echo. I quickly pulled on my boots and threw on my clothes. I picked up my pack and looked outside. All of the fires were out and the camp was dead silent. I snuck out of the camp and walked up to the massive gate. I looked up at the Latin phrase high above me.

"Only those Worthy May Tame The Beast...." I said to myself.

I took a deep breath and placed a hand on the gate. I gave a light push and the gate opened without any resistance nor noise. I stepped through the gate hesitantly. I heard someone call out my name and I looked back to see the crew running to get to me before the gate slammed shut. I heard them pound against the doors before I proceeded deeper as I turned on my flashlight.

I hadn't taken but five steps before massive torches started to light up in pairs traveling down the cavern. I turned off my flashlight and walked down the carved stone path. I finally came to another gate that had massive dragons carved into them.

I heard a roar come from above and I looked up to see two dragons descend in metal armour. I took a step back as they landed. I had two massive spears put in my face.

"State your business Hum—" one of the guards bellowed but was cut short by a feminine voice.

"Stop right there! He's the human sent by Dracisa!" The voice said above me and I looked up to see a very slender white dragon descended towards us.

The two guards stepped back and the dragon landed, a regal feeling coming off her.

"Are you sure Queen Guinevere?" The guard on her  left asked.

Queen Guinevere nodded with a smile as she lowered her head to me, "I would recognize the smell of my mate's bloodline anywhere."

It took me a few seconds to understand why the Queen's name was familiar but then it hit me.

I knelt down and bowed my head deeply, "Queen Guinevere its an honor your majesty."

Queen Guinevere tried not to laugh but couldn't help it as she started laughing loudly.

"Please my child, get on your feet. As a Pendragon and my descendant, you do not need to bow to me." She said lifting my chin with a talon.

"Queen Guinevere I hate to contradict you but I feel that even if I were royalty I would still bow to you." I said as I bowed my head again.

"Then as Queen I order you to not bow to me. And please don't call me anything formal. I'd like you to just call me Grandma." Guinevere commanded.

I blushed slightly as I stood up and looked up at her majesty, "Yes your maj— I mean yes grandma."

Guinevere turned, bellowing before the gates opened. I stood there in awe as I looked on in awe at the massive city and castle.

Guinevere nodded and smiled at me, "Come then Charlie. We have much to discuss."

I nodded as I followed Guinevere into the city.

Hope you all enjoyed this! The Pendragon Heir is a story that I've wanted to start for a while now. So please tell me what you think!
