A Big Risk

Now at the back of the house, Jake triggered Cat's magic. Triggering magic was no longer a problem for him, the only thing left for him to learn was how to use magic without the need to trigger it.

With Cat's magic active, Jake checked the time. One of the quests was for him to practice using magic for one hour and the other quest was for him to deplete his mana completely and keep using magic for three minutes.

Jake didn't intend on completing the quest about depleting his mana yet. If he depleted his mana and either Sky or Andrea was to call him downstairs for dinner, he wouldn't be in any condition to go. He could be bleeding and he would be sweating intensely which was not how he wanted Sky or Andrea to see him.

Jake's aim right now was to complete the quest which said he should practice using magic for one hour.

While using Cat's magic, Jake decided to listen to a little bit of what Andrea was thinking, since he was closer to Jake than Sky.

Moving towards the kitchen window on the tip of his toes, Jake went close enough until Andrea was in the range of the magic. Listening to Andrea's thoughts, Jake chuckled slightly. He could hear a song about cooking coming from Andrea's thoughts.

♪... it's the best hobby, the meals shouldn't be soggy, doesn't matter if you're in the lobby, or even if it's foggy, but don't cook during a robbery♪

Still chuckling quietly and not being able to stand how ridiculous the song was anymore, Jake moved away from the kitchen window till Andrea was no longer in the range of the magic.

Trying to find a way to get close to the living room window without being seen, Jake could hear the thoughts of someone. Looking around, Jake couldn't see anybody, it was only the fence of his house that he could see.

Paying more attention to the thought he was hearing, Jake knew the person wasn't up to anything good.

"... gonna have some fun tonight. I'll follow her and wait until she takes a turn in a dark place, then I can get some of that booty."

Scaling the fence, Jake looked to his side and saw a man with spiky hair using his eyes to follow a woman who was walking across the street. When the woman made a turn and the man could no longer see her, he began walking in the direction of the woman.

Jake could still hear the thoughts of the man. Looking at his house and at the man, Jake decided to go after the man and help the woman. 'I have to do this fast, I don't want to mistakenly mimic whatever magic he has.'

Coming down from the fence to the other side, Jake walked fast and caught up with the man. Tapping him once on the shoulder, Jake said to the man "Excuse me, can you tell me where the nearest hospital is located?"

Not stopping, the man gave Jake a look of contempt and said "Get lost kid."

Moving to the man's front and making sure he stopped, Jake told him "I'm sorry but I don't think you understood my question. The hospital isn't for me, that may be where you'll need to go after this conversation."

Not seeing the woman anywhere, the man looked at Jake with rage. "You little prick." the man yelled with one of his arms turning red.

"Nope." Using all his strength and speed, Jake threw a punch with the steps he learnt straight to the man's face which broke his nose instantly. 'Two seconds, I can't hit him five times if not I might mimic his magic.'

Seeing the man holding his bleeding nose, Jake sent a front kick to the man's stomach which made him topple and spit blood from his mouth. Delivering another kick to his head, the man passed out and fell on the floor.

'That lasted longer than I thought it would, I didn't even hold back.' Jake bent down and looked at the man's hand, it had stopped turning red and reverted to its normal colour. "I'd drag you to a place where people would see you and maybe take you the hospital, but I don't want to mimic your magic, so bye I guess."

Turning around, Jake ran back towards his house and jumped on top of the fence. "I have to ask Miss Anna to teach me how to control my own magic. I can't mimic the magic of everybody I touch for five seconds. If I'm in a fight using a strong type of magic and then mistakenly mimic the weak magic of another person, what will happen to me in that fight?"

Finding a way back into his room through the window he had left from, Jake looked at the mirror, straightened out his clothes and went downstairs. 'They might have called me for dinner when I went out so I'll just check. And when will an hour pass, I don't want to listen to the thoughts of Sky and Dad throughout dinner.'

"Jake." Andrea said when he saw Jake come down from the stairs. "I was just about to send Sky to go get you. Dinner is ready, have a sit. You too Sky, get over here."

Later on, after spending close to an hour listening to Sky's and Andrea's thoughts during dinner, Jake was in his room sitting on a chair looking at his system screen.

"Here goes nothing." Setting a timer on his watch for three minutes, Jake kept using his magic even though his mana had depleted completely. After a few seconds of using his magic, Jake began to feel pain in his head. Feeling something trickle down his nose, Jake touched it and saw blood on his fingers.

Jake rushed to the bathroom, grabbed some tissue paper and put it below his nose. He could feel the pain in his head worsening and he saw the tissue he was holding turn red from all the blood coming out of his nose.

The only good news to his situation was his body was healing the damage being done and when he used his magic for two more minutes his mana will increase.

Dumping the tissue paper he was holding into the trash can, Jake took another and started groaning from the pain in his head. He pushed through the pain and kept the magic active. 'No pain, no gain.' Jake thought as he fell to the floor still ignoring the pain he was feeling.

*beep* *beep* Immediately he heard his watch beep, Jake stopped using the magic and took a loud, deep breath to stop himself from shouting because of the pain. When he stopped using the magic the pain began to subside slowly and he got up from the floor.

"There is no way a normal person can go through that without dying, I'm only alive right now because my body can heal itself." Checking the system message he just received, Jake was a little bit happy.
