The Cave Portal Part One

Joseph sat down by the fire; he moved his hand, and a wave of red strands start forming into a raven.

'I not leaving him out here on his own right now.'

"Go to Damian tell him there has been a change of plans, meet me at the gate with everyone in 10." The red raven flew off under Joseph gaze.

"Will you show me the way through the forest towards where the malikias where before they disappeared."

"I will take you there" Aven answered straight away.

"Thank you, I suggest you rest while we wait for the others, I want to check this out sooner rather than later."

"We will be able to do that, but it is getting dark, and it will be far more dangerous to travel at night." Aven stated as he sat back down by the fire.

"Tell me Aven has your sense training progressed to the point that you can function fully in the dark." Joseph asked.

"I'm not good at it yet, I am able to get a basic outline of things only, but I am not able actually seeing all the details of the area." Aven answered.

'Well, that is a good start' Joseph stayed lost in thought for a short while.

"Aven, we are going to spend a short time with me teaching you a new spell, this is actually a spell that can work automatically once you are used to it as it can change from a spell into more of an ability." As he spoke, he turned to Aven.

———————————————————-

'What does he mean by that?'

Aven turned to look at Joseph Randall and that was when he caught sight of his orange eyes that now glowed with a hidden light and that took up the whole of the eyes with only the slit pupils as a stark contrast.

Joseph smirked as Aven stared towards him.

'How is he doing that'.

"Let's get to work on getting your Night Sight working." Joseph said as he turned back to look at the village gate.

"Night sight uses a combination of both spell work and your sense abilities this is why it changes with time and practice to become more of an ability than a spell."

"How is that even possible." Aven asked.

"Haha, it's because it's using an ability that when used to a certain level can help your sense abilities to evolve but it takes so much longer for that to happen without the aid of the spell and for some it may never happen."

Joseph moved over to the fire and crouched down "Take the fire for example it gives off a very faint energy that your sense can pick up on, this you have already started to see with your senses which is why you can see the outlines in the dark."

Joseph reached out and placed his hand within the flames and his hand glowed as he scooped up some of the flames. "Magic is a form of energy that we can see but that can be hidden from the naked eye with enough practice."

Joseph closed his hand the flame disappearing, and the light extinguished. "The energy is all around you, whether in large amounts like within the flames, living creatures or to a smaller degree like the dead leaves. While the senses can be honed and trained to see everything with time without magic it takes time and study for our brains to register what everything is."

Aven stared at the fire 'so I'm already partially aware of the energy using my senses.'

"If everything is just energy how can the senses truly determine what everything is?"

"The senses alone cannot truly determine what everything around you is, but the mind works with your senses to help fill in the gaps. Gradually the way you perceive things changes so even darkness would stop being an issue."

"But surely we aren't really seeing in the dark if it's just a sense ability alone as it doesn't affect the world around you."

Aven enquired.

"Well let me ask you this Aven if your not really seeing the world around you how is that you could be moving through the area around you while that world is in the dark with ease."

Aven just sat there 'I don't understand, it surely can't let you see the world, but you would still be able to move with ease but not sight.'

As he looked back at Joseph, he once again saw the slightest of glows from Joseph's eyes. 'Wait energy?'

"Do you mean that the energy or magic in our bodies would be reacting to allow for us to see?"

"Not bad kid, but not quite." Joseph sat there and doubled check the gate. "You see everybody has energy that runs throughout their body, it is actually this energy that is used in spells but that is for another day."

Reaching out Joseph's hand flashed as multiple strands of colour appeared. "It is this energy that we wish to use, mostly we wish to the use the energy continually running in our eye to allow for us to change how we see."

"For now, at least using the spell will help you but be warned that while the spell can help it can also hinder in your progress so practice as much as you can with and without using the spell."

"The spell is simple and actually not to hard when it comes to visualisation as what we are truly after is the energy actively reacting to our will. The spell is abscondere lucem tenebris aspectu this literally means hide light dark sight. What does that make you think and understand Aven?" Joseph questioned.

'Hide light dark sight, well the last bit I guess is the reference to seeing in the dark but what does the hide light mean isn't it just wasted words.'

"Is the last part referring to seeing in the dark?" Aven asked still struggling with the word choices.

———————————————————

"Ha ha ha" for a second Joseph just laughed.

'This kid is far to intriguing.'

"Well, that is true in away but also not, you see the energy in our bodies doesn't generally give out a visible light as it would be easy to become vulnerable. So, the dark is as much to represent the night as the energy within ourselves."

"The energy within us isn't visible but is visible within everything else?"

Aven tilted his head in thought.

"It is more that we stopped truly using the energy within ourselves and as a natural protection the energy enters a more dormant state. This means that the energy gives out barely any signs, but this has a downside as when you actively use energy it is easy to perceive."

Joseph paused.

'I'm not explaining this right.'

"Think of it this way energy is in everything but stays as a force that is invisible to most as it acts in passive ways but what we are aiming todo now is use the energy actively. When using the energy actively it becomes obvious to all as it glows and give of a colour". With that he waved his hand and a red raven started to grow from the red strands.

"So, is that why your eyes seem to be glowing?" Aven enquired.

"Yes, and that is why we include hide in the spell." Joseph's eyes glowed even brighter "without the hide in the spell your eyes become like a homing beacon and that is really not going to help."

"So, the spell is almost backwards we want to hide in the darkness to cover the light and active that which is dark to see the light." Aven said as he looked into the flames.

Joseph sat in silence as he listened to Aven whispering to himself repeatedly saying the same sentence.

'There we go you got it'. Joseph smiled as he saw the boy's eyes start to glow.
