41 Start of danger

ALICE

She paused for a minute. I can hear the background engine of a running car. I did not know she can drive. Wait, she just typed on her phone...she can’t drive with that.

Is she riding a taxi?

The car slowed down and pulled into a stop. Katherine is saying something to the driver, but I can’t hear what they’re saying. Their voice sounded distant. Like she placed her phone away from her ear. But I can hear angry whispers, soft cuss, and furious hisses coming from the driver.

But the sound hissed continuously. Like a wheel skidding and pulling into momentum. The more I listen, the more I’m convinced it’s actually the car making that noise. Engine problem? If that’s true they would have stopped and Katherine will complain. But no...she didn’t..

That means something happened. I pressed my ear into my phone to listen further. The wheels screeched and Katherine yelp.

“Katherine? What happened?” She did not respond. More like she can’t hear me. She’s spanking something... car seat?

“Outrun them! Hurry up! Turn left. Turn left!” she barked orders to the driver.

“I’m planning to Miss,” the driver said, evidently tensed.

“Katherine! What’s going on?! ” No response.

“Answer me, damn it!” I slammed my fist to the pillar. Growing anxious by the state of things I’m hearing. I pressed my ear further and listen closely.

“Alice? Sh*t, where’s my phone?!” she’s patting and flipping seats.

“There!” Few seconds paused and her anxious voice talked to me.

“Alice? Can you hear me?”

“Yes! Katherine, what’s going on? Is someone chasing you? Are you okay?” she took a shaky breath. Battling to keep her voice steady, she said.

“Listen, my mom… she.. she is the most dangerous witch you ever met. What you sent to me yesterday, about Michael’s deal with my mom. My dad texted me it’s real. And now I can’t go home. Her men are waiting outside of my condo. So, can I ask you to do something for me?”

“Anything,” I replied, gulping the big lump forming on my throat. With my fingers tensed, I balled them into a fist.

“Please, protect Michael. I made a slip from her men this morning. She forced me to board a flight heading to New York… And I can’t do that.“ Her voice started shaking…

“I just can’t.” she sniffed. “Look, I know she’s pissed. I mean really pissed. She will do anything to make me come with her. And there’s a possibility she will use Michael’s safety against me. To threatened me. So please, don’t let him out of your sight.”

“I understand.” I bit my dry lips.

“Promise me. You’ll keep him safe.” her voice on edge. The merry tone she had earlier vanished. Leaving no trace.

“I promise.” she exhaled a slow controlled breath. And the call ended.

I’m still staring at the screen. Unsure what to make of this new unexpected situation. Arising out of nowhere. Without giving any warning. I cussed under my breath and glanced to where Michael stood earlier.

He’s not there. Oh, f*ck! I sprint towards the spot. Shoving people, push past travelers, kids, kicking luggage, I ran around the outdoor parameter.

But no Michael can be found. Don’t tell me… they got him? Damn it!

Sneak peek for the next chapters:

Sh*t. Should I trust James? I feel like I shouldn’t. But Diana’s been telling me about James’ family. Especially his older brother. Or younger brother? I grunt in frustration.

Why can’t I remember?

All hell loose, am I supposed to wait here for a miracle? His brother is 15 minutes late. I tapped my legs on the pavement, shaking and cracking my finger’s joints in restlessness. I keep glancing at my watch and scan around for a tall silvery-blonde hair dude.

At least, according to James, he will help me in my search with Michael. I spread my legs apart and lean my elbows unto my knees. Burying my face between my hands. The heat of the afternoon sun is not helping me with my growing anxiety. Scorching my skin beneath my clothes, I closed my eyes. Enduring the searing hotness breathing on my back.

“You’re Ms. Martinez?” Finally, he’s here. I exhaled in relief. I raised myself and squint at the tall figure in front of me.

“Yeah. You are?” I ran my eyes on his figure from head to toe. James is not lying when he told me his brother has pure silvery-blonde hair. It’s distinctly white and a bit sparkly even the sun rays bounced when it landed on his head.

“My name is Keith Sky Sinclair.” he introduced his name without sparing an effort or expressing any emotions.

“And I’m here to help you with your case.” He stretched his hand in front of me. I take a closer look at his burnish hands, into his translucent, impassive face. For a few minutes, we stayed in silence. Sizing each other up.

Under his gaze, I stopped moving, frozen in place. My breath hitches at my throat.

This guy…

This is the first time I met someone... whose strings don’t possess any color. A gleaming, transparent thread is connecting around him… like a real spiderweb. I mean literally. They glint under the sun like it's never actually there.

I thought it's impossible for someone, to not feel any emotions through and through. But he proved me wrong... He's literally the only living person I met, that does not have a drop of emotions in his being.

Just who the hell is this guy?
