A Detective's Dilemma

It was a typical day with no notable events taking place. Clutching the documents and endeavoring to manage the case, I experienced a significant amount of conversation in my surroundings. I had a strong desire to request silence, however, I let out a sigh and tried to remain composed. A few minutes later, my contemplation was abruptly interrupted by an unexpected exclamation.

" I SAID, LET GO OF ME!" A man displaying a fierce demeanor, with his body smeared in blood, emitted a loud roar while attempting to resist.

" WHY DON'T YOU GET IT? "I'MM INNO-" he said, interrupted by one of my colleagues, Kai.

"Alright, sir. Keep all of this drama to yourself. You will be detained until we take your statement and the statements of others," Kai interjected. Despite the man's persistent screaming, he disregarded any attempts to communicate with him and as a result, he was ultimately apprehended and incarcerated.

"What is coming next?" I uttered softly while rubbing my neck, coming to the realization that a fresh case had been introduced prior to the resolution of the preceding ones.

It was evident that Arlo was displeased with the current situation. He cursed and smacked the desk. It is not his first time doing that. It is likely that he is upset due to the anticipated implementation of a customary decision to prolong our working hours. The onlookers directed their gazes towards him, their countenances filled with expressions of contempt. They were correct. Arlo spends his working hours with his legs on the desk, watching videos on his phone. Everyone returned to their desks and resumed their tasks, while Arlo also resumed watching whatever he had been observing.

I wanted to take a break, so I donned my coat and departed to regain my composure. I stood in front of the police department and called my mom. I had to inform her of my anticipated late arrival tonight.

"Hello?" Mom responded to the phone call; her voice barely discernible amidst the bustling ambiance of her restaurant. It appears that she is occupied attending to a large number of customers.

"Hi mom! Actually, I'll be late tonight, so don't wait for me."

"Alright, sweetheart! I'm kind of busy right now, so I will call you later. Take care!" Mom said as I wished her luck and hung up the call.

I stood outside, folding my hands and trying to synthesize my thoughts.

"It's cold, isn't it?" An anonymous person who was behind me said, approaching me.

I glanced behind me to catch a sight of Kai, so I smiled and greeted him. Kai ignited his cigarette and tried to open a conversation, so he told me about that violent man, he was called Ezra Lee. A man who had murdered his wife after a quarrel that lasted for some hours.

"Grisly! How did he kill her?"

"He stabbed her multiple times savagely."

" Anyways, do you need any assistance, Ivy?" He added after he inhaled his cigarette.

"You already know the answer, but thanks, I appreciate it." I replied confidently.

It was so cold that my breath was misting, my nose turned crimson, and my hands were numb, so I went back inside and left Kai to continue smoking outside.

I have resumed my investigation into one of the cases I am currently working on, namely the case of Elena Hernandez. A 17-year-old girl, who has been missing for the past three days. Upon thorough examination of her file, no discernible evidence is present to aid in her whereabouts.

"What if she escaped?" Kai abruptly, causing my heart to skip a beat.

"That is impossible." I remarked as I perused Elena's file.

"But as you can see, her parents didn't receive any menacing message, she's academically outstanding and she has no enemies." He said while pointing his finger at the file.

I inhaled deeply and responded, "I believe you have other cases you should concentrate on, right?" He agreed and left for his desk.

"Did I lose control of my nerves again?" I muttered, persistently scouring for any potential clues, hoping to find anything this time.

I didn't notice that the time was passing so swiftly, almost everyone left so I grabbed my car key, coat, a copy of Elena's file, and the notes I had compiled during the investigation, and departed.

"Welcome home!" Mom said, embracing me.

"Hello!" I said, hugging her back.

"I'll go take a quick bath, and then we can talk," I said, patting my mom's back and heading to my room.

I had initially intended to take a shower. However, I unexpectedly found myself reclining on my bed, fixating my gaze upon the evidence board that I had set up in my room. I experienced a sense of confinement within the labyrinth of my own thoughts. Elena's case posed a significant challenge for me. I had previously successfully resolved larger and more complex cases, so how could a simple case stop me?

"Sometimes even strong people's batteries die," Mom commented, holding a plate.

"It's not what you think. Anyways, I should stop thinking about my work when I'm back home," I said with a smile on my face.

Mom had cooked my favorite dish, so I had dinner and wanted to browse through my phone. As I was browsing through my phone on one of the platforms, Elena's account was among the suggested accounts for me. I clicked on her account and sat properly on the bed.

"Finally..." I said with a hopeful expression on my face.
