Chapter 56: Epilogue 2

I was sitting in the waiting room outside the Inquisitor’s office while Jessica had her meeting with them. I would’ve preferred to be in there with her, but that was against regulations. All I could really do was hope that what I’d said was enough to help her.

I looked over at the sound of the office door opening to see Jessica walking out.

Walking out alone without a security escort. That meant she was home free.

I smiled as I rose to my feet to meet her. Jessica smiled back at me, but it was a strained one. Clearly Jessica hadn’t got off as freely as I first thought.

We didn’t say anything at first when we reached each other. We just hugged and held tight.

“What happened?” I asked softly.

Jessica drew back a little so we could look each other in the eye. She hesitated for a second, then she offered me her right wrist. “They took my magic, Felix,” she replied in a soft, strained voice. “Most of it, anyway.”
