The Lone Tamer And the Flightless Dragon

Eons ago, mankind and the elves engaged in a bloody war which lasted generations. While mankind fought with blood and steel, the elves summoned and tamed monsters and beasts called 'chimeras' to turn the tide of battle onto them. Grim Fenris is a descendant of a long-lost elven elite bloodline of chimera tamers. His parents left him in the care of his grandfather, who died shortly after he turned thirteen, leaving Grim to fend off for himself in this hostile world. Two centuries after mankind’s insurmountable victory against the pointy-eared conquerors, the Kingdom of Vanheim had finally known peace. Meanwhile, Grim mysteriously stumbled into a cave where he discovered a flightless baby dragon. Little did he know that this dragon was going to be his partner in crime for the years to come. The peace did not last long as the humans were once more bombarded with constant attacks from an all too familiar batch of foes – the chimeras. Invitation

Grim Fenris was taken aback by what the Sunstrider said.

"Sunstrider, what are these 'Night Elves' that you speak of?"

Grim asked.

"Please allow me to finish." The Sunstrider cleared his throat. "The Night Elves are the same us. We come from the same ancestor, their skins just lean a tad more towards the amethyst-colored spectrum. We still do not know what their goals are. But the fact of the matter is that they have been summoning chimeras all throughout Vanheim."

The Sunstrider said.

"S-So, you mean that they were the ones responsible for Dart's mother and that ghoul with insatiable hunger?!"

"Yes. That is what I am saying."

Grim looked at Dart straight in the eyes.

"Do you remember seeing another group of elves from when you just hatched? They look the same as me, and that guy over there, but their skins glint more like amethysts."

Grim asked Dart.

"N-No. I do not remember such people at all, Grim."

Dart shook his head.

"I saw what you did back in the cave."

The Sunstrider said.

Cold sweat started to drip from Grim Fenris' temple.

"For a brief moment there, you looked like a humanoid form of your dragon right here."

He said.

"Wait, you saw us getting attacked by a ghoul yet you did nothing and just stood idly by?"

Grim was annoyed.

"It would have been a waste to join in on that fight, seeing as you were in perfect control of the situation."

The Sunstrider's nonchalant way of speaking irked Grim off.

"Where did you learn that move, Grim Fenris?"

Grim kept his mouth shut, he did not want them to know about the Tamer Book left by his grandfather.

"You can keep your mouth shut all you want, I already know everything about Mithardir and elven chimera taming."

He said with a smirk.

"Then what was the point of you asking?"

Grim rolled his eyes.

"Your parents are not going to be coming back for a long time. It would from months to a year at best, and that is the shortest time possible."

The Sunstrider casually revealed it to Grim while he closed his eyes and leaned against the trees.

Seemingly absorbing the serenity and lushness of nature.

"I know that you wish to talk to them. But what will you do while waiting? What does your chimera want to do?"

The man's questions were clearly concise and legitimate.

"He's right. What am I even going to do in this world right now?"

Grim asked himself as his eyes glanced at Dart, who was staring at him with his tongue out, smiling.

"How about Dart? What would he want?"

Grim's train of thought was interrupted by the Sunstrider throwing a piece of acorn at his forehead.

"Ow! What's the big idea?! You want to fight?!"

Asked the enraged elven boy.

"That would be a waste of both our time. No. I would like to formally invite you to be a member of the Luna Wolves. The elite blades of the King himself. I will even dedicate the time of the day to teach you…"

"Hang on! I still do not understand what you guys do. The Luna Wolves is it or whatever it is."

Grim scratched the back of his head impatiently.

"You'll have a roof under you and your dragon's head, the food, armor, clothing, it is all inclusive. I will even take you under my wing and show you the ropes, as I have said earlier. And more importantly, you will have something to do as you wait for your parents' return."

The Sunstrider said.

Grim thought long and hard about it.

"You have only told me about the good things that come with it, tell me what a Luna Wolf actually does on a day to day basis."

The Sunstrider cracked his knuckles and stretched for a bit.

He proceeded to take his bow out from shining coat at his back and drew an arrow, aimed it somewhere above the trees and let the projectile fly.

With one tug of the bow's string, the arrow hit its mark perfectly.

A gargoyle came crashing down from the trees. The Sunstrider's arrow pierced its heart clean.

"What the hell is that?!"

Grim stepped back while Dart hid behind him, side-eyeing what just happened.

"This, child, is a gargoyle."

The Sunstrider said as he picked its lifeless body up, blood still flowing from the wound inflicted by the arrow.

"It is a chimera summoned by the Night Elves. Just the sheer number of how many of these things are around is still being monitored. But there are a lot, lots and lots of them, in fact. And as a Luna Wolf, you will have to fight against these monstrosities."

"Damn, that was really cool!"

Grim thought to himself after watching the Sunstrider take a chimera down in under five seconds.

Although he refused to admit it, maybe it was because of his pride? Who knows.

"You can even train alongside your dragon, but please practice caution, we do not want any incident of a specific black dragon burning down a city by mistake, wouldn't we?"

He said.

"Just think about it, Grim. You will be closer to finding out about just why your parents decided to leave you without even saying goodbye-"

The Sunstrider's words was cut off by Grim Fenris.

Grin was slowly approaching him, eyes squinted and focused.

"All this effort to try and recruit me, just what are you guys playing at? Surely an elven kid would not be this valuable to you if not for some other reason."

While Grim walked towards the Sunstrider, Dart was also fast approaching behind Grim, he had his back.

"Your bloodline. The Fenris bloodline. We believe that your unique pact with your tamed chimera will be a valuable addition to our growing group. We have not told your parents as well, and seeing as how capable they are as warriors, it would be worth it to take a chance on you."
