Chapter five

The outing had done a lot of good and she became more cheery.The teacher came into the class."pop quiz",he announced as groans and whines erupted around the class.

"I'm not prepared,why now,I'm so doomed",Anne whined,she was never ready for any pop quiz. I, on the other hand, was always ready.He gave us the questions and sat down waiting for the time.

"I need to read more often,if you hadn't helped me I would have been a goner", I rolled my eyes.she really needs help.

"Joshua and scarlet bring the papers to my office",Anne froze in her seats.I also didn't want to go but I couldn't refuse the teacher.Maybe I am a goody two shoes.we stood up in sync,turning to anne, 'I'll be right back'. I carried it leading the way to his office. I kept walking ahead trying not to start any conversation. We got to the teacher's office,entering. I dropped the paper on the table.Turning to the door about to leave. He grabbed my hand, making me slap his hands away from me harshly.

"Owww, what was that for?" he held his hand, rubbing it slightly. I felt bad thinking I had injured him."I was just about to ask for your name".

'Scarlet'

He tilted his head confused.Oh Yh, he's a new student so he just started learning sign language.

"I'm not fluent in sign language so I don't understand what you're saying",he said nervously scratching the back of his neck.I made my way over to the desk grabbing a piece of paper and pen.I showed him.

" Scarlet,what a nice name",we chatted some more and he was actually an easy going person no wonder he was popular with people.I wanted to ask him if he knew Anne but the bell rang signalling it was time for another class.

"It was nice talking to you scarlet"he waved exiting the room.oh shit I forgot anne was waiting for me. I rushed to the classroom seeing everyone had gone. She paced back and forth.seeing me entering she touched me searching everywhere.

"Did he hurt you?Are you ok?. I should have followed you".I grabbed her shoulder trying to steady her,mouthing.

'I'm fine'

She took a deep breath,"promise me you won't scare me like that again". I raised my hands in defeat."you have to avoid him,he's dangerous".she said with all seriousness in her face.I tried picturing his cute face with something terrifying.

'He's a nice guy,we just chatted,that's all'. I tried to reassure her.she calmed down a bit still lectured me on staying away from him.

We went for our chemistry class together.I entered seeing him,he waved a little at me.I tried to wave back but Anne dragged me to our seats.

"Since when did you go all smiley smiley with the enemy".I shrugged.

'He doesn't look like a bad person'.Anne grumbled to herself about me betraying her.sigh.This is exhausting.

The teacher finished explaining and said,"since I'm done explaining we'll be divided into groups" everyone scurried to meet their friends. "But we'll use this already compiled list". What a let down,I was nervous I hadn't co related with anyone except anne.I talked to them at times but not much. He called out the names.

Anne looked at me with sad eyes,before going to meet her partner.suddenly I felt alone and anxious.

I looked at him surprised,going over to meet him.He faced me giving me a boyish grin.How cute.

"Nice to meet you,partner".he joked,I couldn't help but laugh. His smile was contagious. I could also feel a particular eye's boring holes at the back of our heads.someone isn't going to be happy about this.we continued the class not before I turned to check my Anne,she had started talking to her partner so everything was good.or so I thought.

Joshua tapped me and signed saying 'how are you'.I looked him deadpan in the face.He looked anxious with my expression proceeding to check his phone.his whole confused expression was kinda funny.I couldn't help laughing.

"Miss scarlet,did I say anything funny that you seem to be out of control".he said clearly annoyed.

'I'm sorry, sir'.He let out a scowl before getting on with his class.we both looked at each other covering our mouths to keep us from bursting out in a series of laughter.

'I'm not deaf,just mute you can speak and I'll understand,nice effort though'.

He let out a small chuckle before facing the class.

The class came to an end.time for lunch,and man I was starving.

"Do you wanna grab lunch together", I looked at the doorway Where Anne was waiting for me.I turned back to him to decline."I guess another time".

In the cafeteria,

Anne was quiet, really quiet she picked her food slowly instead of devouring it like she normally would have done. I tapped her, making her look up at me clearly annoyed.

'You're not hungry', i didn't want to bring up the Joshua topic knowing it would piss her off the most.

"I'm fine,clearly fine can't you see". She said forcefully stabbing her steamed porklets.I see.definitely annoyed.

"How could you have fun with 'him', I thought you were my best friend"she pointed the fork at me.I gently face the fork down.

'Of course,we're best friends for life'.

"Then why were you being all buddy buddy with him".she accused.

'I'm getting along with him,he's new and I felt bad for him and you never told exactly what was between the both of you'.

She fell quiet stabbing the porklet once more as she stuffed it into her mouth trying not to make eye-contact with me. I let out an exhausted sigh.My pasta had gone cold.she stood up going to drop off her before exiting the hall. Are we fighting.we haven't fought before I felt a pain in my chest I have to apologise later but why won't she tell me what happened.I lost my appetite,so I threw the cold pasta into the trash can and dropped my tray.I didn't see Anne through the rest of the class.

After school, I came back to the room seeing Anne on her bed reading a book.that's awfully out of character. I dropped my bag on my bed going over to the bathroom to shower. I came out some time later and her side lamp had gone off. I hate this atmosphere.

In the morning,

I woke up to find only myself in the room.she left without me. I could feel my chest grow heavy the more I thought about it. I checked the time, 8:15am shit I was late. I quickly jumped off my bed,showered and ran to class.I burst into class breathing heavily not minding the stairs I got. I made my way over to sit down. The teacher gave me a pointed look.

"I'll pardon you this time cause you made an effort to run a marathon here". Some people chuckled. He went back to teaching then another bang was heard making everyone turn towards the door.

"Why did you students choose today to interrupt my class", he turned towards the door."oh the new kid",.

"I apologise sir,you see...

He raised his palm to Joshua's face."I don't even want to hear it, just go get a seat``.Joshua pressed his lip together making his way over to…,I turned sideways and the seat beside was the only empty one. I looked around searching for Anne.ah,there she was sitting in front with her partner from chemistry class.

"Hey",hands snapped in my face bringing me back to reality.in my front stood Joshua.

"You were lost in a daze, I asked if I could sit here",he pointed at the seat beside, I looked at Anne one last time.before nodding for him to sit down.

After the class,

I wanted to talk to Anne but she didn't wait one second as the bell rang and she was out the door.

"Hey,aren't you going for the next class? It's almost time".Joshua said as he slung his bag across his bag.I waved my hands saying he could go on. He flashed me a thumbs before exiting the door. I let out a deep sigh, I felt sick to the stomach.
