1 Exodus

He ran as fast as he could his paws beating the dirt at a frantic pace causing the earth to almost vibrate at the impact. The little girl fast asleep on his back, tied down with soft materials as not to wake her. The wind whistled through past his ears and the trees were a blur.

He dodged left and right, his wife close behind him covering the girls sent with that of her own. He did not dare look back in fear of losing the sent left for them by the witch.

The howling of the royal guard split the night causing him to pick up speed. Some distance grew between him and his wife, but she soon closed the gap. The little child stirred but was soon fast asleep.

Without warning a guard burst from the density of the brush landing on the wife. With a furious grow she swung around grabbing the wolf by its paw. In one swift movement, the wolf was thrown against a tree, an audible sound of breaking bones reaching her ears. She did not waste any time before dashing after her husband who was tearing through the throat of another wolf without slowing his pace.

They reached a large tree with a strange sent wrapped around it and stopped as a beautiful woman with black hair and pale skin stepped from its bark. Her green almost translucent dress floated around her like water and her emerald-colored eyes glowed with power.

"Bring her to me." She ordered, her sultry voice caressing both of the wolves' frail nerves. The male stepped forward, shifting into his human form and gently taking the still sleeping child from his back. He held her to his chest inhaling her unique scent. The woman also shifted into her human form and they both stood before the powerful witch, holding their child for the last time.

A single tear slipped down the woman's cheek. Placing the gentlest of kisses on the girl's forehead they handed her to the witch. The witch nodded and handed them a dagger encrusted with emerald stones and rare metal.

Without a word the woman took it and watched as the witch turned and vanished within the tree. She reached out, her fingers brushing the rough bark as a sob tore through her chest. The man held her to him their love for their child and the loss of her causing both to break down into tears.

"It was the only way..." She placed her finger over his mouth stopping him from speaking.

"I know." She whispered before placing the dagger into his hands. Their eyes connected, blue and gold clashing but never has more love and understanding passed between them.

"I love you." They whispered at the same time before their lips crashed together. They fought, pouring every emotion, and every thought into that last kiss.

Her eyes grew wide and she gasped as he plunged the dagger into her heart. He pulled away from her and looked down at her tear-filled blue eyes. A small smile formed on her lips as she gently placed her hand on his cheek. He leaned into her touch and closed his eyes listening as her heart stopped its beautiful song.

The sound of slaughter filled his ears and he looked up to find himself surrounded by wolves, but he did not care. His daughter was safe from the hands of monsters, his wife laid in his arms with a smile on her face and her spirit calling to him to follow her and so he did.

He pulled the dagger from her chest, watching as the blood dripped onto his leg before plunging it into his own heart. The pain was brief, but soon his world faded to darkness as he joined his wife in spirit.

To say the king was furious was a complete understatement. He was completely livid. His booming voice rattled the walls of the castle. The guard kneeling in front of him breathing heavily in fear.

When the guards first heard the command to kill all female werewolves, a lot refused and therefore were killed after watching the king slaughter every female in their families then they were also killed.

Some males were already mated and killed their own mates before killing themselves as well. Once a werewolf loses his or her mate their wolves snap causing them to usually kill themselves.

The wolves that were not mated found it easy to follow the King's rule.

The man now bowed in front of the King was one of the unmated wolves.

The king started paving a dangerous growl rumbling in his chest.

"You said he killed his wife?" He asked as he turned to the guard.

"Yes, m'lord."

"And the girl?"

The guard swallowed hard, knowing the king would not like his answer. Fear grabbed at his mind and he almost forgot to answer but formed the words past his lips.

"She was gone by the time we got there. Her scent was still strong in the air, but she was gone."

In a fit of rage, the king launched himself at the guard and wrapped an iron grip around his throat. He lifted the guard from the ground and growled into his face.

"I want her found! Even if it means you have to destroy the whole dimension to reach her.

If she is not killed before her 18th birthday, I will kill you and your precious sons."

The man nodded to the best of his abilities, his eyes wide why fear.

Dropping the guard the king headed to his study.

His 4-year-old son sat in the corner, clutching his teddy to his chest as silent tears rolled down his red cheeks.

"Come here, son." He ordered. The boy obeyed and was picked up and placed on his father's lap as he sat down by the desk. "Nicholas my boy. One day when you're old enough you will understand why this was done."

With an understanding beyond his years, the boy wiped his eyes and looked at his father. "I understand Papa." The toy dropped from his hands and he slid off his father's lap. "I will not hold this against you Papa, but I wish there was another way." With that, the boy turned his back on his father and exited the office.

The king hung his head in shame. He had turned his loving son into an empty shell to protect him. His heart clenched as he looked to the still form of his wife. Her eyes still open, but no love shone through them. Her once rosy cheeks now pale, void of life and the knife still plunged deep in her heart.

Shutting down his pain he focused on the task at hand. The girl
