The Kingmaker System

"The masterminds are cooler than heroes," I mutter as I stare at the chess pieces before me. It is easier to be the one who sits in the shadows and moves the pieces, likewise deciding the flow of the game. Heroes will foolishly sacrifice their lives for the good cause and villains will sacrifice the world for their own gain, but masterminds will use both the heroes and villains to their own benefit. Why, you ask? Well, that's because I've lost my life once while trying to be a hero so, I don't want that anymore. I'd rather be a mastermind who molds the world as per my convenience and live peacefully. Because, why not? *** [Defender of Divine Glory says you are the hope of this world.] What? [Goddess of Wisdom believes that you will be the one to save the world.] Wait, what?! [Propose the Grand Duke the idea of a fake marriage.] And, why would I do that?! [Stop the assassination of Prince Eric.] Why would I save him?! [The candidates for the throne are:... Who will you choose?] Ah! I give up... It seems like a curse that anyone who wishes for a slacker life in Isekai will have to go through the most troublesome things. In my past life, I died because of one rookie mistake but after being transmigrated in the world of fantasy I've gotten an opportunity to start afresh, but unlike the protagonists who look for their love and glory, I'd rather make money and live a life of a slacker. I have magic, I have power and I have money, what else do I need? Well, that was the plan but this damn system is getting on my nerves. I mean who in their sane mind would want to mess with the complicated royal family and political affairs? But that's not all though. I've also become the saviour of this world. Things just can't be anymore worse! Besides, the penalty of failing this quest is... [Failure: Destruction of the World.] It seems like if I screw up in selecting the right person then the destruction that is going to befall the world won't be stopped. If I speak of my reward then it's this vague thing. [Reward: Fulfillment of any wish.] "If that's the case then, I'd rather choose the person who would be the best fit for the throne." And that's how I decided that I would become the Kingmaker.

Prince Eric left after a while and I made sure he returned safely before I went back to the Black Tower.

The concubine was lying on the sheets sniffling and moaning and I couldn't help but feel pity for her. If I abandoned her then she would die.

"Oh God..." She groaned and I walked close to her.

"... My poor boy... if there is any way... to protect him from the Queen then please... please... save him... Before she... kills him... just like she is doing to me..."

"Oi, Defender of Divine Glory you heard her." I thought.

[Defender of Divine Glory is listening.]

"Don't just listen." I snapped at him.

[Defender of Divine Glory says he is not allowed to interfere with the matters of mortal life.]

"Says the one who had been switching souls and twisting the time loop."

[Goddess of Wisdom says if helping them were that easy then they would have done so already.]

[Defender of Divine Glory says you are allowed to do anything.]

"At this point even if you say I'm not allowed to I'll do whatever I want. Besides, you better remember that you have lost the bet, Defender of Divine Glory so, get ready to reward me."

[Defender of Divine Glory has assigned you a quest.]

[Rescue Concubine Elise.

Rewards: Any two of the following skills:

- Transcendent Invulnerability.

- Teleportation.

- Flight.

Failure: Death of Concubine Elise.]

"Please... save him... I'll do... anything."

My ears perked up as Concubine Elise that.

"Will you really do anything?" I spoke up making the woman gasp and look around.

I was still invisible as I asked again, "Will you really do anything to help your son?"

"Yes! Yes, I will." She frantically shouted.

"Then hold onto your life for a while."

"Pardon?"

"I... will save you and your son." I announced.

"Are you God?" She asked and I chuckled as I activated my Dragon's Presence to a low level making her gasp again.

"Will you not accept my help if I say I am not God?"

She was quiet for a moment, "If... you are willing... to save us then... I don't care... even if it means that I'm making a deal with a devil."

I smiled a little and walked towards her, her eyes were still frantically moving to locate me.

"I am no devil either." I said and looked at her sickly body.

"Then...?"

"You will know soon." I said and she sniffed.

I gently brushed away a tear drop from her bony cheek before I stepped back.

"Keep this a secret and hold onto your life until I come for you."

"Yes... I will." Her white chapped lips curled up in a smile before I walked away with the plan ready for the next day.

I checked the descriptions of the rewards that I was going to get and nodded in satisfaction.

The transcendent invulnerability would make my body so strong that no attacks of any range would be able to harm me, but there were exceptions that if I couldn't handle this power well or if my opponent was a divine being then I couldn't do much.

The teleportation was just as the name suggested, I could teleport without any spell or anything but the drawback was that until I was used to using it well I could only teleport to the places that I had visited and only within a small frame of space.

The third was flight which would give me wings, literal wings, that would range from one to six pairs based on my practice and focus.

I was surprised when I read that I could choose not one but two skills, it made me happy as well as slightly wary as it wouldn't be easy to rescue a person from the royal palace and from right under the nose of the Queen.

I needed help.

The next day, Rune, Father and I went out of the palace to roam around the town. The town was in a festive mood too as the streets were decorated and there were a lot of people selling and buying and with the street musicians putting on a show.

It almost seemed peaceful but I couldn't relax, I had work to do.

"It would have been fun if Uncle were with us too." I spoke up making Rune and Duke look at me.

"What?" Rune asked.

"Why do you want him with us?" Duke asked me and I smiled.

"He's family too."

That should do for now.

[Goddess of Wisdom anticipates your next move.]

"Just sit back and watch the show."

"Still, he's a troublesome person so, it's better that he isn't here."

"Besides, Uncle is busy with work so, he doesn't have time to be with us."

Both Rune and Duke seemed to have some hostility towards Silas but I didn't care about it, half my work was done. Now the next thing was...

"Ah, I'm craving something sweet." I spoke up making Rune and the Duke perk up.

"Would you like some cotton candy?"

"What about jelly?"

"Can you get me both?" I asked looking at the two.

"Yes, I'll be right back."

"I'll get you whatever you want."

Both of them walked away quickly to get what I asked for and I smiled as I took a few steps away from the knights and the crowd did the rest of the work.

"Ah... I got lost. What should I do?" I feigned panic as I ended up in an alleyway alone.

"Somebody help me!"

I suppressed my smile as I felt the mana disturbance behind me.

"Can't you just normally call me?"

I turned around to see him standing behind me with his arms crossed at his chest and I smiled widely.

"Ah, Uncle, you are here to save me!"

"Can you stop that act?" He sighed running his hand through his hair and my smile shrunk.

"But I really am lost, Uncle?" I pouted making him shake his head.

"If you're going to keep up the act then I'm leaving I have work." He said as he looked down at me and I dropped my act.

"I need your help."

"With what?"

"I'm gonna do something illegal and dangerous."

He raised his eyebrows at me and I added, "And it is borderline treasonous."

His lips twitched as his eyes started glowing with curiosity, "May I ask what we're going to do?"

I smirked as I told him my plan and he shook his head with a small smile on his face.

"What's your gain in it?"

Rewards and, "Payback."

"Pardon?"

"The Golden Serpent tried to mess with my brother and father."

"Golden Serpent?" He wondered aloud before his eyes widened and he looked at me before he covered his mouth with his shoulders bobbing as he turned away.

He liked the nickname.

After he was done laughing he turned to me with the traces of the smile on his face and said, "Good for you, I personally hate the Golden snake myself."

"Then, are we doing it?" I stretched my hand to him and he grasped it.

"Yes."

"Now, shall we go back to my father and brother? They must be worried sick."

He shook his head lightly before he scooped me up from the ground and walked out of the alleyway.

Duke and Rune were looking around when I and Silas appeared making them both bombard us with questions and I answered that I got lost when I got distracted by something.

Silas left to make preparations for my plan while I and my family returned to the palace. Rune and Duke had no idea of what I was about to do and all that was left for me to do was wait for the nightfall.
