Rob hadn’t liked it. It was something that made him different. Separate from everyone else. Something artificial.

He had done his best to hang back and go unnoticed, with varying degrees of success. Occasionally, he would use his charm to get a small request granted, maybe skip to the front of a line, or convince a deli worker to stay open just five more minutes, but he would be twinged with guilt afterwards.

As Rob rinsed the toothpaste from his mouth, he took another glance at the mirror. He wondered if the spark in his eyes was the same as the one in Jack’s. It was odd, to think of it as something that connected him with others rather than excluding him.

Sounds of Kendrick Lamar got louder as Rob headed down the stairs and into the kitchen. Jack was sat at the table, a half-peeled banana in one hand and a coffee mug by his side as he fiddled with a tablet. He looked up and smiled as he took a large bite.
