Chapter 11

Neither of them spoke as the wind picked up and blew a dried patch of seaweed along the shore. A shiver ran through Rob. Cold didn’t seem to affect him the way it did humans, but he knew the current chill in the air was due to more than just the weather.

“You cold, California boy?”

Rob turned to see Jack look up at him with a grin. “You’d better get used to it,” Jack continued. “New Jersey’s got some intense weather.”

Rob rolled his eyes. “I didn’t live in San Diego,” he said. “It’s colder in Northern California than it is here.”

“Yeah, sure.” Jack sat up and leaned over to poke Rob in the ribs. “Maybe you need to bulk up. Get some meat on those bones so you don’t freeze.”

Rob’s cheeks burned, but the easy smile on Jack’s face calmed him down. “I’ve never gotten any complaints,” he said archly.

Jack burst into laughter and clapped him on the shoulder. “I bet you haven’t,” he said cheerfully. “You’re cute as hell.”
