Hallows Eve

The Grand Hall is abuzz with activity as the holiday many of us are familiar with is here. The last month at Hogwarts has been interesting. I've made little progress with Summa Exitium. Progress is progress, though. No matter how little it might be.

Albus has been helping whenever he can, and that's helped me in several areas. Mainly my general magic knowledge. Sure, it was large when I started here. But the amount Albus has blows my mind.

Given his age, it makes sense. There has been one problem I've constantly run into. That being Professor McGonagall. She's not a bad person or teacher by any means. It's just her constant watching forces me to go to classes.

Albus explained to me that she's ultimately in charge of House Gryffindor, and her decisions are final. Sucks for me.

"Happy Hallows Eve, Alex."

My thoughts are interrupted as the Granger girl makes an introduction. I've got to get used to calling her Hermione. It's a difficult thing to say, but she is my friend now. I used to pride myself on always being alone.

Now I know what it feels like to be around kids my age who are like me. I don't feel alone anymore. It's actually lovely.

"Same to you, Hermione. You've been spending a lot of time with Harry and Ron. I never took you for a fan."

The teasing edge to my voice is subtle, but she catches it. An annoyed eye roll later, and she's sitting next to me. It's almost dinner time, so everyone sits at their respective tables. It's preventing me from sitting with another friend of mine.

Daphne Greengrass.

I've grown close to her in the past month. We've shared a lot of classes, and since Hermione spends a good amount of her time with Harry and Ron, that allows me time to hang out with Daphne.

"You know me, and I am NOT a fan. Harry is a regular kid like us. Besides, he needs all the help he can get. Same with Ron; I don't know how he'll pass the first year at this rate."

The Weasley boy is what I'd call undriven. I'm sure if he just tried, he'd get better grades. His brothers do just fine in their classes. Not that it matters much to me. I hardly know the guy, and his decisions are ultimately his own.

"That's quite true; you're not a fan of anyone. Right?"

Another tease, and she's growing tired of them. She is a fan of certain authors in the wizarding and muggle world. We've talked about them before, and she gushes like a 12 year old would when talking about her favorites.

"Enough, Alex. That's not funny. Well, are you planning anything tonight? If not, I was hoping you and I could spend time together and catch up. It's been a few weeks since we did something alone."

There is humor and joy in her voice as she tells me to stop. She does enjoy the light teasing I subject her to. It's never malicious, and I never take it too far. We've become close after dealing with Malfoy for some time.

Malfoy no longer has his attention on us. Not since Harry and Ron have proven to take it. Sadly, I don't think it'll last long. Hermione being around those two means Malfoy will set his sights on her soon.

Back to what she asked me in the first place.

Hanging out tonight...

That does sound nice. Hermione is a friend, and you're supposed to hang out with your friends whenever you get a chance.

"Sure, sounds like a good time. The last time the two of us were alone was a little after Harry and Malfoy had their little flying competition."

That was over a month ago. Her smile gets larger, and she takes a second to bring her happiness under control. I don't know why she's so happy, but seeing I matter to someone is nice. Albus and the orphanage are the only ones I can say that about.

It's safe to say I can say that about Hermione now.

"Yeah, I'm looking forward to it too. Shall we meet in the Library around 6:30?"

That's a plan to me. I nod my head with a calm smile, and she stands up with renewed energy. Leaving to hang out with Ron and Harry until later.

It's nice to have friends.
