With a crooked smile, Frank sagged back in his chair. “Thanks. You won’t regret it.”

John wasn’t so sure about that, but a pace away from the table, he paused and turned back. “You got one thing wrong earlier,” he said, keeping his voice low. “I don’t hate you. I never could. I tried, oh Lord, trust me, I tried. But if I’d ever figured out a way to do that, none of this would even matter to me. I would’ve come out here, put a good show on for the people, and gone my merry way without thinking twice. Because that’s what I do.”

“Because the show must go on?” Frank said softly.

“Exactly. So if I’m a little slow coming back around to that, it’s because I can’thate you. Because you were the best part of living here. Regardless of how it all turned out in the end.”
