Strange surrounding

Despite the deafening silence, Mariella pressed on venturing further into the woods. The further she walked, the darker her surrounding became, which was especially strange because by now the sun should be high in the sky.

The trees began to become unfathomablely large, completely blocking out any light that might try and sneak past their many branches. The ground became ice cold on her bare feet, and her skin grew goosebumps all over her exposed arms.

A mysterious thick blue mist danced it's way around the large tree trunks and spilled across the forest floor. This mist clung so heavily onto the ground, it made it hard for her to walk forward without stepping on sharp twigs and rocks. Even when she looked back at the rabbit, all she could clearly see were it's pair of fluffy white ears sticking up.

Everything from her knees down were practically invisible to her. The only thing she could do was to walk as light as possible to avoid hurting her feet on the unknown objects spread across the forest floor. She couldn't see what was there, so she had to tread lightly.

[This mist.. it's making my head hurt.] She inwardly complained.

She gingerly massaged her temples in a futile attempt to suppress her increasing headache. The rabbit noticed it's Master's discomfort and quickly tried to soothe her the best it could.

"Master, what's wrong? Is your head hurting you?"

The rabbits voice was drowned out by a loud buzzing noise inside Mariella's ears, causing her to not hear a word it said. The trees began to sway back and forth, and the ground felt like it was spinning beneath her.

[Ouch, my head! It feels like it's going to split open!]

Just when the pain became too unbearable for her to handle, her eye sight blurred into complete darkness and her body fell limp onto to cold ground.

It happened so fast that their was no way for her to prevent it. Even the rabbit was lost to the situation. How could they of known that there would be poison mist here? No one had warned them of such a thing, and the mist was odorless. There were no signs to help mentally prepare!

"Master!!" The rabbit looked on in horror, and quickly hopped to her side.

••••••••

When Mariella's eyes finally began to flutter open, the first thing she saw was far from the dark forest that she remembered. Instead, she found herself in a brightly lit, and quaint little hut. There were dried flowers and herbs hanging from the ceiling, a small table close to the fireplace set with three empty plates, and a dirt floor.

It was well taken care of considering how old the building had to be. Someone clearly had been living here for awhile.

[Is this going to be a common thing for me now? Fall unconscious and have a stranger take me back home?] She scoffed at herself. So much for being independent. Everywhere she goes somebody has to save her.

[Maya will be furious when I tell her what I got myself into this time.]

She couldn't help but be annoyed with her own incompetence. She regretted not turning around and going back from where she came once she saw that strange mist. Who in their right mind sees such a strange anomaly and decides it's safe to breathe in? No wonder she fainted! Next time something like that happens, she'll know how to handle herself.

Right now though, that the last of her worries.

She was sceptical to a fault. She didn't trust anyone that didn't prove they were sincere to her, like the doctor and Maya were. The people who saved her this time? Ha! Like she would get lucky enough to be saved twice in her life time. The world didn't work like that! Who knows what their true motives are for bringing her here.

Most humans hated elfs, so why save her? Did they see her passed out in the forest and decided they bring her back as a free slave? Or even worse, what if they wanted to sell her to a brothel or to some pervert? What if these people WERE the perverts? They could even want to cut off her ears to use for black magic later.

She quickly got up from the bed the strangers must of put her in, and began searching the hut for a way to defend herself.

[Go ahead and try me!]

She picked up a heavy brass candle stick she found on the table, and held it with both her hands like a axe. After testing a few swings with it, she decided it'd be the best weapon she'd find here.

It was heavy enough to cause some damage if she hit someone with it, but light enough to were she could easily move it any way she liked. The material it was made of was good too, very sturdy.

If anyone tried to sneak their way up on her, then she'd was mentally prepared to crack someone's scull if need be. She didn't exactly want to hurt anyone, but she had to protect herself.

Because of the dirt floors, her steps were almost completely silent. She gracefully tip-toed across the small hut in a matter of seconds and found herself at the front door. She pressed one of her ears firmly against it, trying to hear if there was anyone outside of it. When she didn't hear anything, she decided it was safe to try and escape.

[It's either now or never. Who knows when they'll come back for me.]

With one hand still holding her candlestick up, ready to strike, the other hand grabbed the door's handle and slowly pulled it open. The sun quickly warmed her serious face.
