Hatching

It took Delvin 6 months to create a perfected design for dragon scale armor and 1 year for the dragon egg to hatch.

He had actually greatly underestimated the level of time and patience it took to create armor or at least a design for a set of armor. Creating a design and establishing measurements alone took weeks! He and hiccup, who had taken to the project like a fish to water had spent countless hours deciding on a design that was both efficient and looked cool.

They had to figure out weak points and points and needed extra padding and points that were most easy to cover and those that weren't. They needed to decide which parts would be leather and which parts would be dragon scale and which parts would be metal.

Figuring out which dragon scales to use alone had taken them months, apparently, while Nadder scales were good for light protection and maneuverability that was all they could do, and believe Delvin

When you fight a giant firebreathing lizard you want to be in heavy armor

So Nadder scales were changed from being the main layer of protection to the underlayer instead, sitting within places that couldnt be covered like joints and other weak areas. But from there? They had to find a new type of dragon scale

Also, Delvin had to note that hiccup was far smarter than he seemed, the boy had already been theorizing how to create automatic bolas throwers and had been mid-prototype creation when Delvin had barged into his room, causing him to have a near-death experience with a far too highly calibrated small launcher

However despite perfecting the armor design through meticulous research and testing the boys had come across a bottleneck in progress that still plagued them.

They had no proper scales to use in the armor.

Deadly Nadder scales were too lightweight for direct combat, Gronkle skin was far too rough and course to use across the entire design and would be impractically large and heavy. Zippleback scale while strong had a bad habit of falling apart after most of the dragons they belonged to blew themselves up to avoid capture and monstrous nightmare skin while already rare was filled with tiny gel sockets that lit on fire upon exposure to heat, definitely not a good idea to use for armor

So in conclusion, they could design the armor but couldnt make it

This put the boys in such a funk that it took Stoick lecturing them both for hours on end to give up for now and focus on other things, which in Hiccup's case was his apprenticeship at Bobbers forge, and for Delvin it was his other project

A project that unlike his armor designing was a secret to the entirety of the world, that Delvin son of none was attempting to hatch a dragon

For the entire six months that it took Delvin spent every spare minute that he had when he wasn't working on the armor, training, or helping out the people of berk. He carried it in a bag on his back at all times, claiming it was just a bag of stones that he was using to strengthen his weak leg and thankfully no one questioned him, although they did give him some odd looks

He would often hike to the caves in which he found the egg, which was no picnic with his bad led, trying to find any clue or trace of what dragon it could be the egg of but he found nothing, no scales, no droppings and thankfully no angry mother dragon.

Originally he had worried that perhaps the egg was a dud but after "borrowing" some of Gothi's medical equipment he was able to establish a heartbeat, one that was slow and methodical

And so he spent a year carrying around this egg in a bag, waiting for it to hatch and training his skills, while every once and a while searched through the book of dragons for any trace of a dragon that could be used to create the best armor but sadly most that may have worked either did not migrate to berk or were extremely rare.

However one day, roughly a year after he had found it, the egg began to twitch

Delvin who had been mid-spar with Astrid at the time was so shocked that he almost ended up with an axe to the face. Before running off with a

"Sorry i just remembered i left the fire running!" he yelled as he ran off himself, or at least moved as fast as a man with a limp could, leaving a dumbstruck Astrid behind him who looked like he had just told her she was getting engaged

"But He never skips leg day" the girl muttered in shock as she stared at the receding form of her cousin "he never skips leg day… ever"

As Delvin thanked the gods that Astrid was far to shellshocked to follow him he felt the twitches of the egg increase in volume, so he hurried his way towards his room, hoping not to be seen by any of the Hoffersons

"Want a pint Delvin?" Aasa, Astrid's mother offered as she held up a mug

"No thanks!" he responded shocking everyone present as he rushed up the stairs to his room, thanking the gods once more

"What was that all about?" His mother questioned, leaning towards her sister and looking slightly worried

"Puberty probably"

As Delvin finally reached his room he heard the distinct sound of cracking and gently opened his bag to see the egg covered in lines and cracks. Carefully placing it on his desk he watched as it continued to shake and as watched as the yellow rocklike outer shell began to crack

BOOOM!!

The egg exploded, Launching him across the room and shaking the whole of the Hofferson house, thankfully everyone in berk was far too used to explosions so nobody did anything other than a pause before returning to their lives

And as Delvin coughed and wiped the soot from his eyes he saw a beautiful golden dragon, a sharp knife-like horn on its front and covered in some of the sharpest scales he had ever seen

"A pinecone!?"
