"There is no doubt it is him, then?" Thorfinn's voice was grave.

"It is him," replied Freydis, looking away from the sad remnants of her brother. "These are his clothes, his weapons. It is Thorvald."

"We must prepare a coffin for him, then," said Thorvard. "He may rest in it until we return to Greenland."

Gudrid hurried outside for a draught of fresh air, fighing an urge to vomit, and left Thorfinn, Thorvard and Freydis with the bones of the one who had once loved her so much, and who arrived here because of her. She wasn't alone for long, though. Thorfinn came out to her.

"Are you unwell, my dear?" he asked, offering her his arm. She leaned on him gratefully.

"I am fine, Thorfinn," she said, forcing her voice to sound steady.

"Do you regret coming here now?" her husband inquired with concern.

"No, of course not! I... I simply need to rest, and soon I will feel better."
