Chapter 13: Reading the Tarot cards with Areti

Emily waved them off and felt a deep sense of relief to be left alone. Just as she was debating what to do, she got caught by Frosso and had to spend some time listening to her recounting dramatic stories of the past when the wicked Turks occupied the island.

'Tell me, Yiayia, what do you know about that lady in the village, the one called Areti, the fortune teller?' Emily asked after a while.

Frosso crossed herself in haste several times. 'Oof, she's a witch! Not a good woman, I'm sure of it. She goes to church all right, but she's a heathen at heart. She only goes because it would make people talk if she didn't. No, keep away from her sort; she's a devil's child, for sure.' And the old lady crossed herself again just to be on the safe side.

Emily eventually managed to take her leave.

'Stay, stay,' urged Frosso. 'Where are you off to?'

'I just want to go for a walk,' Emily said, managing to extricate herself from the old lady's clutching hand.
