Finding flaws

As both boys were talking, well more like Josh was doing most of the talking and Tom mostly listened, their mothers were also chatting up a storm whilst sitting around the table in the kitchen. At various points in time they both burst out laughing, causing the boys to turn their heads in the women's direction and wonder what was so funny. Sometimes the boys would eavesdrop for a while from where they sat on the floor before continuing on with their mostly one sided conversation.

After a while of this cycle reappearing the women hadn't laughed explosively for a while, Josh seemed to notice this and tuned to look through the double-door door-less doorway which led to the dining room, which in turn had an open door which led to the kitchen.

He couldn't see them from where he sat, Tom noticing how Josh was no longer listening to what he was saying was somewhat puzzled as to why he was being ignored. However, he noticed where the boy was looking and followed his gaze. Tom also seemed to understand what Josh was looking for, he himself also being unable to see the women decided to stand up to take a closer look.

Josh, noticing the boy next to him standing up, did the same, he grabbed hold of Tom's sleeve and gently pulled himself up. They then started walking into the dining room, their steps were slow and silent, for some reason they had a strange feeling as they got closer to the room. The strange feeling told them that they didn't want to be seen or get involved with whatever was going down.

With Joshua still holding onto Tom's arm they both snuck up to the door which led to the kitchen, they both skilfully avoided the doorway so as not to be in the line of sight of anybody in the room.

They paused for a couple of seconds to hear if anything would happen, they were both pressed against the wall. They heard nothing come from inside the room, thinking it might be clear Josh took a slight peak into the room with one eye, barely uncovering himself so as not to be seen.

Inside he saw both women, they were still sitting there, however, the mood and atmosphere was quite different than what it had been all this time. They both looked as if they were seething, stream was practically coming out of their mouths and their faces almost seemed to have the affect of angry characters in shows, where their face turns fully black and only white or red lights are left where the eyes should be.

It looked as though a showdown was about to take place, or rather it may already have even started taking place. They seemed to be having a staring contest of sorts, their gazes had been glued on each other for the whole time since Josh had seen them. He wondered what on earth had happened for them to become like this, their teeth were grinding together and their veins were bulging out of their foreheads.

Tom, however, was unaware to the change in the kitchen, he wasn't able to see as he was standing to the other side of Josh. He then tapped Josh on the shoulder and mouthed at him.

"What's going on?" He asked silently.

Josh however couldn't read lips and wasn't focusing very much on what Tom had just said to him, he then turned back to the door to observe the women more. Tom feeling somewhat annoyed tapped him again, when he didn't turn back around he tapped him more and more until he gave up, he sighed silently and leaned around Josh to try and see what was happening.

Josh was also shocked and confused by what he saw, he couldn't make sense of it because his mother looked rather annoyed, and he'd never known her to get angry before as she was extremely patient. Also, he found that it was weird for her to get angry, especially at Josh's mother, this was as his own mother was always talking about how amazing Josh's mother was and was gushing about the times they spent together shopping and all. They'd apparently been best friends since they met in college, Josh's mother had apparently helped his mother many times, causing her to have an unparalleled devotion toward her.

Both boys were wondering what was about to happen, after a while of them just staying in a standstill, not moving nor saying a word, Josh decided to break the silence and come out, however before he could do that both ladies moved at once. They both instantly ripped open their bags in search of something, they both instantaneously pulled out their mobile phones and opened them. They then both opened an app and showed the woman opposite them whatever was on the screen.

Josh and Tom being where they were, were able to see what was on their screens. They were pictures of the two boys as babies, Josh's picture was crawling around ok the floor with nothing but a nappy, seeing this, Josh burst into a cold sweat and turned to look at Tom's face to see if he was laughing or snickering. Josh's robotic like turn revealed that Tom wasn't in fact laughing, if anything, he looked like he was more dead inside than Josh was.

Josh turned back slowly and saw that Tom's picture was that of him sitting in a bathtub, completely naked. Tom's whole body seemed to have turned into a rock, he wasn't moving and his expression froze.

However, at the same time as that, both woman started practically screaming at each other. Their voices could be heard throughout the house, the boys would wonder if the neighbours would come to complain if they weren't both currently mentally numb from the shock of seeing those photos and being exposed to their new friend.

"My son's better!", they said simultaneously. They stared at each other and both opened their mouths once again, "No mine is!"

The both began bickering loudly, like little kids. Arguing about how their sons were doing in school, their height, their extracurricular, their BMI, their diet even things like their shoe sizes.

After seemingly drawing a conclusion in that argument, they began pulling out more and more embarrassing photos. The two boys who had been standing there frozen this entire time then snapped out of it, Josh then called out subconsciously.

"No, wait…-" both the boys' eyes widened, Josh quickly covered his mouth and Tom stared daggers at him.

The mothers quickly dragged them over and started arguing about them again, pointing at their hair or their faces and comparing them. Trying to convince the other why their own son was better.

My brain 5am:

Josh didn't want people to know he was a ninja, because after all, ninjas had to keep their identities top secret. Else their families and friends would get in trouble with villains. After all, he was sure that a villain must be lurking around, watching him. Villains needed to find weaknesses of the people they fight after all, that was the reason he couldn't let people know, well that and the fact his dad told him to stop playing around with ninja stars to get on with his homework
